Small Vs Large Scopes

I use a 3-9 X 44mm Rifle scope and I'm verry happy with it. For mainly arable stalking, small lens means the centre of the scope is close to the centre the barrel, low 3X mag means wide field of view plus other advantages. But all I seem to see in gun shops and on YouTube Is big 24x mag with a 60mm lens. Is this just marketing trying to make more money or am I missing something? I haven't had any trouble in low light conditions yet.

Yep same here
Swaro 1-8 x 24 are fantastic stalking scopes with the illumination takes you beyond dusk and the field of view for woodland stalking or open fields is brilliant as is the tracking capability as VSS says it is a circular journey, eventually you settle in to what you really need or feel more at home with 👍

Used my 56mm scopes for years deer/foxes in and out of woodland day or night (with a lamp)
Used thermal spotters for years so you know where the quarry is or is coming through so with practice the rifle in nearly on the intended target with out searching for it.

I have an 80's Swarovski Habict fixed 4-power and its almost as crisp & 'bright' of image as my Zeiss 56mm variable.

That it will sit ultra-low on an accommodating action and nestle within super-cool Conetrol rings is the icing.

I have Zeiss 6-24x56 scopes for both my stalking rifles plus an Alpex 4K that spends more time on one of them than the Zeiss does.

The 56mm objective allows more light into the scope to start with, however optimum exit pupil size is 7mm meaning optimum magnification is 8x (56 / 7). Most of the time the scope stays at 8x, although gets out down to 6x sometimes when in the woods on foot. In daylight in a highseat the mag sits at 8x unless I need a bit more when it usually goes up to around 12x. On very rare occasions it’ll get wound up to 24x but only when I have, for example, a fallow out in the middle of a field that I can lift my head & watch after the shot.

The Alpex sits at 7x normally as this gives me a good compromise of field of view & also allows use of the LRF box. In some circumstances, such as yesterdays Muntjac buck, it gets turned up a notch to 14x to enable more accurate shot placement.

As already been said, a 8x56 scope is usually more than enough for UK stalking & if you’re predominantly in woodland in foot then a 6x42 should do you fine.

Also be aware that as we age the optimum light gathering our eyes can manage reduces. The below table is from an astronomy telescope site. I stick with a 44mm scope.

"The maximum pupil diameter decreases with age. Thereby, the light sensitivity of the eye decreases. The following values apply on average:

  • 20 years: 7.2 mm
  • 30 years: 6.6 mm
  • 40 years: 6.0 mm
  • 50 years: 5.4 mm
  • 60 years: 4.8 mm
  • 70 years: 4.2 mm
  • 80 years: 3.6 mm

I’ve been using a 1.5-6x35 on my .22lr, very bright If old Leupold. I have an old 2.5-10 x 56 Habicht for the woods and a 3-12x50 Z4i for high seat and meadows - roe and fallow. My .223 wears an Alpex 4k lite and I’ll be getting something similar for my .17hmr - currently a 2-9x50 Delta Titanium which can’t match the Alpex for last light and night on rabbits and foxes.

My own experience has been to get to know how to use what I have, properly, before chasing new kit. I still prefer glass to digital, especially in current wet conditions where digital has proven less proficient. That said, with IR, my Alpex was still capable long after the new Lynx 3.0 had given up in the murk and mist.

Personal preference, i always like to zoom in. I often zoom in to 28x with the Hik to take the shot. However it’s usually left at base mag then zoom into the target
