I’ve been tasked by a forest management company I’m associated with to help advertise a stalking lease that is available to tender.
Although Ive had a working history with the site, the lease would be between the successful applicant and the company (not via me)

Details are below!!!

SITE DESCRIPTION (Maps below)

WHITE COW
HA. 722
Postcode. PH17 2QE
Species. Red Deer
Per 100ha 18-40 (approx)
13/4/26-31/3/27

White Cow is a large privately owned commercial forest plantation near to Kinloch Rannoch, Perthshire.

It is made up of mostly mature standing timber. The site is deer fenced but the fence is poor in certain areas and ingress is common. Deer use the site as a wintering area.

Forest design is a combination of old heavy commercial timber with some windblow pockets, ride systems and frequent opens offering very good opportunities for stalking. The wood has large ‘open hill’ sections interspersed between the forested areas which amount to around 75% of the total area.

The wood is surrounded by open hill stalking estates.

Vehicular access is via a private estate (Finnart) and through a large commercial forest plantation (Barracks) managed by F&W Forestry from Bridge of Gaur. Be aware of forest works including felling and timber haulage when accessing the site and follow/adhere to all signage.

The site itself is accessed through a ford in a river that runs under a railway line and is 4wd only. Vehicular access may not be possible at certain times due to flooding and spate conditions in the river that runs alongside and through the site. This can sometimes restrict access for days at a time so must be considered before applying.

Foot access only can be taken at an alternative location via ‘the soldiers’ trenches’ in the north of the site. Again, site access may be restricted due to high water conditions. There are vehicular (ATV) restrictions within the soldiers’ trenches area of White Cow.

There is strictly no other access allowed to site – especially over the railway line.

There are currently no high seats on site.

Public access is not common within the wood but always possible.

Forest operations are carried out periodically within the site and no compensation will be possible if the timing or upheaval of these impacts stalking success.

The internal road system is several miles long and condition is good. It has been upgraded and expanded in the last 2 years.

PRIORITIES/OBJECTIVES/POTENTIAL

Deer culls have been light over the last few years. The minimum cull target for the site is 15-20 red deer split 50/50 between red stags and hinds/calves. We would encourage more deer than this to be shot – especially hinds and calves - if possible but appreciate the access constraints of the site can impact the achievable cull.

Culling within the site would suit both casual stalkers or perhaps more committed group or individuals who are willing to invest into the site. There are no infrastructure facilities within white cow currently but the addition of caravans for residency and perhaps carcasses processing facilities and/or ATV storage/extraction option could enhance the opportunities on site. Infrastructure additions may be subject to deposits.

The lease holder would need DSC level 2 and first aid at work (FAAW) certificate and all stalkers on site would need DSC level 1 or equivalent and FAAW. If ATV/s are to be used, then appropriate certification would be required for any operators.

A thorough, approved risk assessment would also be required before any stalking commences.

We would require monthly cull returns for the site. Information to be input into a spreadsheet and forwarded or shared to the head office.

Offers for the site should be submitted by April 6th. Offers are to be made at £ per hectare. The successful bidder will be notified by 5pm on April 13th. Access to the site will be given once the following is received:

• Stalker certification
• Full payment
• All stalker details (Name, FAC, registration plates etc.)
• Risk Assessment
• Public liability insurance (commercial if guests are to be entertained)

Do you know if they have a idea on cost please?

@Griffon Woodland Matt, is this block the land to the West of Barracks over the ford? Trying to make sense of the map above but I've never heard of it referred to as White Cow?

Given the history/ecology, is this an SSSI or other designated site?

Best regards
You're correct it's part of the ex FC/FLS 'Barracks' block.

Referred to as White Cow as translation of the Scots Gaelic name of the land form of the hill - Leacann na Bo Gile - 'The tile of the White Cow'.

You'll be able to have a snoop yourself for any relevant ecological/archealogical designations on the SiteLink website - SiteLink
