According to the Daily Mail,
Sadiq Khan’s security team left a bag containing a rifle, some pistols and ammunition on the pavement outside his house at 21.30 on Tuesday.
Found by a lady and taken home by her partner.
Photographed then police called to take ‘em away.
Apparently the guy asked if they would get a reward and was told he’d get a bag of sweets. KB.
Ps. Apologies if I’m late to the finish line.

Why did the finder feel the need to inform the media?

Had this been you or I the bag would have promptly found its way to the nearest Police Station's Lost Property Department c/o an in-private chat with the Duty Desk Sargent. That you let slip during the conversation a certain frustration with the time taken to process your current "Renewal" or "Variation" would no doubt be noted.
