Flying with guns - BA

We flew out with BA last month to SA. TBH it was the easiest trip so far. However we avoided the additional charges. We paid the £125 for the rifles - we had the written confirmation that ammo has to be travelled separately so avoided that £125. They also wanted to charge an additional £85 handling fee. Which the nice lady over rode the system so we did not have to pay it- however this caused us problems at the final checkout gate just before boarding as we could not get through the gates due to outstanding fees not being paid- luckily this was over ridden by another supervisor- prob so the plane could leave on time- - internal flight was a drama as they wanted to charge us an additional 110 dollars per item (airlink) on top of normal fees- after lots of discussion and saying we would only via card - they waived this fee - but did loose a suitcase which took 3 days to catch us up-
Trip home was pretty uneventful in regards to airline issues.
When I go back I will use PH rifle next time- the quality of rifles and optics have improved dramatically-

a friend and i tried putting both rifles in one peli case for a flight to inverness , they still charged us for two

we flew luton to inverness and the difference between the two was astounding ! luton was a massive dogs arse inverness was a pleasure , one piece of advice i would give is to video every interaction because during the complaint to luton the guy i had all the trouble with blatantly lied but i could not prove otherwise , record all interactions!

easyjet good
virgin good

i dont see the problem with flying with firearms. you just need to arrive with plenty of time.
opposite experience with easyjet myself , twice the 'lost' my firearms , and twice they never made it onto the plane

what a nightmare! only time I have had a similar issue was virgin couldn't find the gun case on my return to the uk. It was lucky that I had an AirTag hidden and was able to walk about and point them to the office it had been left in.

At least one of our party had an AirTag in their rifle case. It worked rather well, and I was a wee bit jealous that I did not have one...

Not for my rifle case you understand, but traveling with B.A. at LHR T5, with firearms and with ammunition, I did lose this more than once...

i use air tags now

one time when the rifle didn't make it onto the plane was because the bod dealing with me wanted me to get the rifle out in the main check in hall and i refused and said normally we go somewhere discreet to check numbers , i knew from his attitude i was going to have trouble

one time on my return the rifle did not appear where they normally do and i could not find anyone interested until eventually i went to the help desk for easyjet and told them they have 10 mins to get my rifle to me or i will be calling the police and reporting it stolen from the last people who signed for it since i had a receipt , they found it in five mins !!

if i can't drive now i just borrow a rifle there

Just having that very conversation this morning with our wee group.

Two have said they will (always) take their own rifles, one is 'off comms" and I am ...

i should perhaps caveat that by saying it would depend where i am going , there are a lot of perfectly normal shooting friendly countries out there

it's just here that there has ever been an issue in my experience

Definitely borrowing a rifle for my next trip. If finances allow I would like a Cape buffalo so will have to burrow a rifle for that, so nay as well borrow one for whole trip 👍

Who would not want to shoot with their own rifle - I would - but the hassle and tiger expense is (for me) a real thing.

I think there is also a concern, that some camp rifles, may be a little...agricultural.

Last time in Mozambique my mate's rifle never made it through customs (we are half-gunning), we used the camp guns.
7mm and a .416 - not terrible.

obvs i'd much prefer my own rifle but i have to weigh up if the hassle is worth it ?

and in my opinion you can either shoot or not and those 'camp' rifles have accounted for a lot of game over the years without problem !

we can all be a bit precious sometimes i think

Sorry guy's, for me it's all about the juice (Well ya know, for me, the action is the juice.)
Without my own rifle the trip would be less:

That is after making sure I can actually board with my rifle,
:old:

Who would not prefer to shoot using their own rifle ? Lufthansa had a very good price on my flight to Johannesburg earlier this year. €485 return, I booked smartly as I had been watching the prices every day. They do change depending on load factors. However when I went to book my rifle the wanted €500,€250 each way to carry it.
Reluctantly I decided to use the PH’s rifle, a Sako 85 with a lovely Swarovski 1-6x24 on top.
Absolutely nothing wrong with it but it did detract from the experience slightly.
Ethiopian Airlines have always been easy to deal with. There is some faffing about in the bowels of baggage handling in Addis Ababa but it works. 2 pieces of luggage up to 23kgs each so if you’re smart you can get the lot in.
A daily wash service in camp allows a minimum of clothes.

interesting enough. i went to a range day yesterday and used two other centrefire fires at a 6 inch target at 100metres. i don’t think i hit the plate with a single round.

made me think about ever borrowing a rifle
