Gifted a personalised handgun in Turkey with ammunition

Decided not to bring it back until it’s decommissioned

You’d think the home office would be able to sort that out for the PM !

No they're not able to sort that out. There is a sword gifted by the Saudis during the first Gulf War in the Cabinet Meeting Room in 10 Downing Street that has to be displayed there as a museum exhibit permanently as the scales on the grip are made of modern ivory, which is illegal. I think it's admirable that our institutions apply the law to all.

Interestingly enough, which not a lot of people know, UK Prime Ministers can keep gifts. As personal property but have to declare them. But US President's cannot. Their gifts become property of "the people"...thus the gifte airplane to Trump. Back when two "JC" weave suits were made for Jim Callaghan and Jimmy Carter the one Carter was give had to go into some sort of archive. 1977 it was. Versions are Carter gave Callaghan the cloth which Callagha the had made into matching suits for him and Carter?

There are a few, very very very few, Great Britain residents who have such but they tend not to be people who would qualify for a government supplied protection officer. Yet are still thought to be "at risk". So Starmer as he qualifies for a protection officer would likely not be granted a PPW unlike his direct counterpart politician in Northern Ireland.

However maybe KS actually wanted to keep it and so deactivation was the only way around?

You never know, this might spark a broader conversation about firearms legislation being so restrictive. Unlikely but who knows.

I do agree with the earlier point regarding at least the law is being applied to all. Of note to me is that it is apparently being decommissioned out there which, to my mind, could suggest that he wants to keep it.
