Mauser M12 .308 Safety Catch

Afternoon all,

I have the above rifle, bought new and its had around 200 rounds through it.
The safety is the traditional three stage Mauser and its very stiff and makes a fair old click unless you use a finger and thumb to move it over very slowly which isn't really practical and I was hoping to be able to flick it on and off just with my thumb.
I've flicked it on and off probably a thousand times in the hope that it would free up but it doesn't seem to be at all.

Any suggestions?

Got three M12s and all are still reassuringly stiff.

Sorry but wouldn’t have it any other way.

I suppose 'stiff' is subjective but a little like trigger pull where you could argue that a 25lb pull is safer than a 2.5lb pull, I'm quite sure than mine is a lot further into the safe zone than needed.

I'm sure they must have been designed to have been operated just with a thumb which even with my hands takes some real doing.

Mine was stiff but I could move it with my thumb. Being a left hander and always shooting off a bipod made it easier using my right hand though.

Yeah agreed.

I can do mine with just a thumb and a bit of effort - personally I pinch it and work it quietly to fire.

I think they are stiff because moving to the fire position actually cocks the firing pin, so it requires a bit of effort to do that. It’s a very safe arrangement as until put into the fire position the firing pin is not cocked and is therefore inherently more safe. I have one and I’m a right handed shooter and find it easier to use the thumb of my left hand over the top of the stock.
