Mauser 98 action bolt/safety catch question

Hi
Help needed please!
I have a TT Proctor .375 built on an old Mauser 98 action with the original (left hand side) 'up and down' flag safety on the bolt.

I was inserting the bolt into the action and (not concentrating) managed to flick the safety down. It now won't insert to the rifle. I have managed to remove the bolt but can't take the safety off, I don't want to force it. Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks in advance

if the bolt is in the fired position it will need to be back in the cocked position and at that point it should be simple to flip the safety switch up.

Sounds like you've accidentally decocked the bolt.
Needs a firm twist to recock it, and then it'll insert as normal.

I've done this with my Sako, dropped the just before a stalk, fortunately was able to twist it back. I now have a knurled knob...to help uncock it.

Ah yes, that looks like it's the case as the firing pin is sticking out, thanks. Unfortunately @VSS twisting it doesn't seem to work

I did the same with my Sako and @Selous showed me how do recock it with a bit of string but the Mauser looks to be different, I probably need a grown up like @Selous to look at it!

Hold the very rear of the bolt firmly in one hand, "raise " the bolt handle against this. It will cock and you will be fine. Just a trick to know.

David.

Trevor sometimes left the detente that prevents this a little shallow or maybe the spring loaded bit that stops the bolt rotating too far has worn.
Easy fix either way, he generally used Argentinian 1909 actions and standard 98 parts fit.

Hook a bootlace around the sear engagement surface on the firing pin and pull against it to ease tension in the firing pin spring. This should then make it easy to rotate the cocking piece into the correct cocked position. Everything should work normally from there.
