£2k to spend on a scope - what would you buy?

Must agree, recently purchased Zeiss for my stalking rifle, have owned and still own other top end German scopes but Zeiss is def top performing

As per the title really - torn between Swaro Z6i and Zeiss - must be a 56mm objective and max mag of at least 14.What do you reckon chaps?

What are you intending to use if for, and what are distances do you normally shoot or are expecting to shoot.

A good quality 6x42 will cover all UK deer stalking. A 8x56 for foxing.

I disagree with you there. The 6x42/8x56 conventional wisdom is often recited on these threads, but I believe times have moved on and we demand more from our hardware. I was holed up in a wood earlier with limited visibility and was grateful that I could wind my scope down to 4 mag. Sometimes I shoot it at 6 mag, but usually leave it at 8 for general stalking.

However, when shooting at extended ranges from a stand it adds comfort to be able to wind the scope up to 10. Where is the disadvantage in having that kind of flexibility?

With a vari-power scope, its likely not to be on the ideal setting when you need to get a quick shot.
If you are shooting from a stand , you are not deer stalking, you are deer shooting.

Gaza916,
You could give Gregor at Macleod of Tain a call. He has offered to mail me a scope to check it out before. You could always put both on your card and do a side by side comparison and go with what your eye likes best and works best for you. Whats works for someone else may not work for you. You want to make sure you buy the right scope for you. I prefer fixed power stalking scopes myself. I like to keep it simple.

What's to stop the shooter using his experience to set the scope to suit his activity? Perhaps even as he leaves his truck/enters the woodland/enters open ground/gets settled in the stand? I concede your point about stalking/shooting being two different activities. I choose to have a rifle with a scope flexible enough to do both.

I should imagine that he has a new scope by now as this thread is 2 years old.

And digging a 2k scope thread up to ask about LED lamps !??? wtf !?

Have to say I'm leaning toward the Zeiss 6-24x56. My reasoning is that it's probably going to go on a rifle that has interchangeable barrels, namely .22-250 and either .270 or 30.06. So I want a quality optic that's good for stalking and foxing.Plus, it's my 40th later this year and evrybody likes spoiling themself once in a while! Thanks for all the comments - keep them coming, particularly you Swaro fans as that Z6i is better looking than my Mrs!
get a sightron s111 6x24x50 with illuminated moa2 ret for under 1000 and snigger when you can dial in out all day bang on the button when the rest fall by the way side

Yeah there ment to be good.i know somebody who has one sat on his 50cal and does miss a beat.sitron and vortex great value for money

swarovski pvi2 6 -24x50 tds4i ret - swarovski's flagship retired early to make way for the z6i range. still a few kicking around, mcleods have a new one for about £1450 i think. best hunting scope ever made (apart from swaro 8x56 illuminated).
+1, best scope I have had the pleasure of owning.
