£500 for your FAC !

It is an interesting point to debate; there’s a lot of pressure on certificate holders and the police. I’ve commented in a recent article in the times about the Plymouth shootings- clear police failure; but why is that? Is it that the police need more funding to do a proper and efficient job?

We have lots of threads on speed of renewals and applications; but if the money we pay (£60 odd quid??) doesn’t cover the costs, is it any wonder the service is poor. Yes we’re all tax payers - but I for one would consider paying for the actual costs of application and a lesser cost of renewal…. But it must be the true costs - the £60 I paid my GP for their letter confirming I’m of sound mind is a complete rip-off as it’s not reflective of their time to verify or issue….

The benefit of a better funded system would be to minimise the chances of a Plymouth, Dunblane, Boot, hungerford, etc… but I’d prefer a separate organisation so it didn’t just get sucked up onto the machine with no accountability…..(e.g. my fishing licences sucked up by NRW which seems to find anti-angling, pro FEB policies)
That's rather like expecting burglary victims to fund the cost of keeping burglars in prison isn't it?

I agree the whole system needs a fundamental redesign. It was designed in the ‘60’s when ledgers and typewriters were the technology of the day. If the government (any government) weren’t so utterly incompetent with IT I would suggest a paperless system with a driving licence style card.

I suspect my as yet unborn grandchildren will still be sending back bits of paper for 1-4-1’s 😒

Complete waste of time as its only a recommendation, thankfully Westminster still has hold of firearms licencing.
I do find it sickening how they keep taking a stab at shooting sports claiming public safety etc, I'd rather they just made their real intentions clear!

In public they will make a song and dance about how sad they are when incidents like these happen, but behind closed doors they are clinking glasses and shaking hands!

Also, I thought Blackford was from a rural seat and an ex crofter, why is he so keen on more regulation, I thought a man like that wouldn't be against putting some venison in the freezer or bagging a few ducks!?

SNP, need I say more?

Of course we could save £££s in the cost to the police in issuing SGCs if we just abolished controls on all (what are left of such) of what are s2 class weapons. Just like before 1967 in fact.

Lets face it if it goes up to £500 i wont be happy but i’ll still pay it. If it were somewhere between the two but we got a decent service thats absolutely fine.

Problem is if you pay peanuts you get monkeys.

They already do mate, it’s called general taxation
Precisely, so surely the same applies to firearms legislation?
Put it this way, if there was no firearms act at all we could all carry on our shooting activities as normal, however there would be a risk that all the malcontents in the country would be carrying out acts of violence throughout the community.
Therefore it is the wider community that benefits from firearms controls and it is they who should pay for it.

Think it’s the lack of monkeys rather than their ability as my experience of FEOs has fortunately always been positive.

Hahaha, no the Lard of the Isles isn’t an ex-Crofter. He’s a privately educated investment banker from Edinburgh mate. Minted.

Where to start?

1. Update IT system

2. Check with GP - any issues yes or no?
Prior to becoming unwell I had only been to see my doc 5 times in 6yrs, was I hiding an illness or in perfectly good health?

3. Who decides on referees?
As has been said, someone says no then what happens if you can supply 10 that say yes?
How well do people actually know the person, unless you’re actually with them 24/7 you’ll never know them - whether family, friend or work colleague. There’s been numerous instances where people have kept things to themselves.

4. Do away with 1-4-1 and moddy notifications

5. One license covers all FAC/SAC (+AWL in Scotland)

6. License covers 10yrs unless notified of criminal activity or health issues which need to be monitored in which case it should be 1/2 costs due to half duration and not full checks.

7. Set minimum number of firearms so if you want a third or fourth rifle, as long as it’s not a larger calibre and you have that option then no checks required.

There are probably more that the learned company of SD could come up with.

Personally 2 large calibres, 1 rimfire and 4 shotguns are plenty enough bang tubes!

I cant see why people need a full so many guns, thats would ease things up a tad

For me.
Two CFs, 3 rimmies (one dedicated NV, one semi and one short barrelled for shooting from a hide or vehicle) and one shotgun + some air rifles.

So not that far off.

This is correct.
I can't believe that any lawful firearms-user considers the certification process a benefit to themselves personally, when it is so obviously an expensive PITA.
The only benefit we derive from the legislation are the same (alleged) benefits that non-firearms-owning members of public enjoy.

FAC/SGC are called certificates rather then licences because they certificate the holder as fit to exercise a right in law - namely the right to hold and use firearms: quite different from 'licences' which permit an activity (driving, flying etc.) otherwise prohibited.
As such, the fees for administration of the system of certification should not favour the rich over the poor. A reasonable fee to discourage vexatious applicants is perhaps not inappropriate - but 'total cost recovery' and the absurd BASC-approved system of paying GPs for reports required by FLD are in my opinion grossly unjust and unconstitutional.

It's BBC mate 🙄 toxic reporter's effluent stiring.

Regardless of what ever price increases happen in the real world - clicking paid for articles won't offer transparency.
