1 for 1 cost

how much is a one for one , looking on cheshire it says its free to vary , then says its £20 to vary/add ................very helpful

If it's a genuine one for one, that being a straight swap, for example a .243 for a .243, then there's no cost. If you want to add or swap to a different calibre or have, in effect a new slot, then it's £20.

The thinking behind it being that there's no difference in a one for one as regards reason for having it and it's a paper exercise in effect, whereas with a new calibre, they would look at that.

Sorry but you're not quite right there Pedro.
One for one is free regardless of whether there is a change of calibre or not. It is only if you increase the number of firearms (moderators count as firearms) that a variation fee is payable.

“One for one” variations
10.71

A variation is always necessary if a certificate holder wishes to change one of the firearms, even if they wish to purchase one identical to the one they are selling (Wilson v Coombe, Queen’s Bench Divisional Court, July 1988). “One for one” variation refers to firearms that are authorised to be acquired following the disposal of a firearm or a request to change an existing authority to acquire. There is no set time in which the certificate holder must apply for a replacement authority once their firearm is disposed of. The keeping of open authorities indefinitely should be discouraged, subject to a collector seeking particular firearms. Applications for “one for one” variations should be made by the certificate holder submitting their firearm certificate together with a completed Form 202 to the police firearms licensing department. Such variations are processed free of charge. In most cases, it will not be necessary to re-examine the applicant’s circumstances. Further enquiries will be necessary, however, if for example the application is for a change of use or for a fullbore firearm when the holder’s shooting club only has facilities for small-bore shooting.

The above taken from HO guidance. Every day is a school day. Although what prompted my interpretation was the experience of a friend (who collects WW2 rifles) who had a slot for a 7.5X55 which he wanted to change for a Lee Enfield .303 and on enquiring, he had to pay the £20. However, licencing departments have been known to get things wrong of course. Or perhaps the tea and biscuit fund was running low at that time.

Just done a 1 for 1 and changed calibre and it was free. Have also done a 1 for 1 swapping a moderator slot for a rifle and that was also free.

lf l sell “any“ of my Firearms it’s a free variation if my variation application is done within 7 days of sale date, variation any other time it’s £20.

Pedro I think in the case of your friend the firearms department got it wrong which is not exactly unheard of in these situations. I have had numerous 1-4-1 free of charge variations over the years and they have mostly involved calibre changes or even changes from a moderator to a rifle.

The only occasion when I had any problems with this was way way back in the distant past when I dropped an application into my local police station which was the norm in those days. Sergeant T who was the desk sergeant that day and who had a reputation for being a very unhelpful and awkward woman told me that she wouldn't accept it as there was no cheque with the application form. I pointed out politely and as diplomatically as I could that a variation fee didn't apply in this case as it was a one for one variation. As was the norm with her she immediately started shouting as if this would make any difference. I politely asked her that in order to clear up any confusion all she needed to do was to read the force instructions, or to phone firearms administration. She was having none of this and created quite a scene so much so that a detective passing through the lobby then also stuck his nose in and sided with the desk sergeant. He was also know for being a bit aggressive in his approach to people. I stuck to my guns and maintained my calm but asked that they just phone the firearms department.
At that point Chief Inspector Evans passed through the entrance door and enquired what the problem was, so I explained it to him. I had met and had dealings with this gentleman previously and his calm considered solution to the situation was to instruct the sergeant to submit the application, and if there was a problem no doubt it would be returned or a request made for payment. The varied certificate (free of charge) was returned to me a few days later.

I just don't want to send it in and for them to then say i need to send in payment and delay things , takes long enough as it is .

But i trust you wise ones , so will just send it in .

To explain in brief ,,, On my renewal visit we discussed my good reason for a 2nd 243 , in short a faster twist for long range fox , Which was granted , but as ive found out there's few if any factory 1-8 243 rifles , So my good reason stays the same , the problem stays the same and the answer is a swap to a 6.5 .
so its not like for like , but one for another .

Good enough for me , i will just send it in payment less .

Your FLD might like to imply that is the case, and it’s probably a nice little earner for them, but it isn’t so - there is no time limit on application for a variation following disposal of a firearm.

See the HOG 10.71 extract at post #5 above:

“There is no set time in which the certificate holder must apply for a replacement authority once their firearm is disposed of.”

In my case i asked recently on renewal for a 243 and was granted , no purchase made and now need a 6.5CM . so hopefully erazing the 243 and printing 6.5CM

I sold a .22 pistol and submitted a 1 for 1 variation for .44 rifle with my notification of disposal, it was done and was free. Which is what HOG says it should be.
