Leather is lovely, but for a gralloching knife you want a material you can wash easily. Whilst its often easy in Scotland to find a nearby burn, or even just wet grass to clean off a knife after a gralloch, In summertime it can often be dry and you end up having to carry home a knife with some blood etc. still on the blade.

I have both types and prefer leather. It doesn’t matter what the material is if a knife is put away dirty then that’s where the contamination starts.
I always clean my knife with antiseptic wipes prior to putting back in the sheath hence why I prefer leather.
A few wipes isn’t that much more to take and they can get rolled up in the dirty gloves that were also worn during the gralloch.

That’s exactly what I do, knife always goes away clean, rubbish goes in a glove.
