Slow down to what? At what speed on an unrestricted road does speed stop killing?


Using enough gun is probably what gots to the stupid 1700ftlbs thing . Not necessary at all.

Thanks for all the useful stuff sent, and the side discussions which got set off were a good read as well!
Unexpected car bill will delay any immediate purchase!
But I expect I will move that way, some longer range rabbits and corvids will be nice with a rimmie and some short range fox, save some .223 reloading.

Have you thought about changing the slot for a .17 Hornet
its a HMR on steroids and a far superior round and you can reload if you want to

Hi there, I've been considering the .17 hornet but been advised that ammo can be very difficult to get? (based in N.I so that may be the issue?)

Had one for a few months a few years ago. Couldn't sell it quick enough.
Misfires, split casings, useless with the slightest breeze.
I use a .22 with HV ammo now for rabbits, does the job fine, reliable and less noise than the HMR.

Same mate, I have hmr but use a .22 with hv's more. The nay sayers reckon .22 hv's aren't accurate but the rws ones (and others) certainly are in my rifles.

my browning T Bolt has been accurate with many, just need to learn the hold over/under and its bang on target. do miss the extra range from the HMR though....

I've had great times with HV ammo.
RWS, Eley and Winchester Lazer were my favourites.

Was a CZ with varmint barrel, don't remember the model number, its long gone. Not a bad rifle just the ammo made me loose confidence. Thinking .22WMR might be worth a go.

I used a wmr exclusively for a few years on everything fox and below, even dispatched a wounded deer with it.

And then I switched to hmr exclusively and I'm afraid that despite the fact that on paper the wmr hits harder notion, the hmr kills quicker on average and is more forgiving in ranging errors past 100yds.
That said I wouldn't recommend dispatching deer with the 17, maybe with a CCI 20gn fmj but the odds of having some to hand would be slim.

One interesting 22 wmr round I found very good was Hornady 25gn ntx. I preferred it to the common 30gn v max offering from Hornady. It expanded much better compared to the vmax which everyone thinks is explosive but are not. Flat to beyond 100yds.
