.17 hmr heads again

It is one thing selling goods not fit for their intended purpose, something else when they are likely to cause serious injury as a result of that failure. It's obvious that HMR ammunition manufacturers are happy to tollerate lax quality control and deal with incidents when they happen, what is it going to take before someone says enough is enough ? A death ??
Is this not something the BASC could take up - British Association for Shooter Conservation ??

Again, it is only ONE manufacturer of HMR. Hornady is having problems all across the spectrum of their line. More reports of CF ammo blowing have come through our little Trading Post. Hornady has been on the slide for a while but hopefully, they will regain control of their QC before something tragic happens.~Muir

Muir why don't you shout it out once more for everyone to hear -

There is only one manufacturer of HMR

All this nonsence about red tips or blue tips or Winchester/CCI/Remington being better and there being no problems with a particular make. The problem seems to be with batches of ammunition of poor quality irrespective of whose label appears on the box.

there may well be one manufacturer but there is a definite difference in some "brands" of brass. it looks different and in my experience i have had all my split necks with Winchester branded ammo.

could have been a bad batch of brass they got in that day or it could be the source for that brass

They area all made the same. It costs about $125 US to change the dies for a different headstamp for rim fire ammo so it's not like they need to set up a different plant. There was a large recall on "Winchester" 17HMR a while back due to splitting necks so that was probably a "lot" issue.~Muir

ok with all this talk of bad ammo am i mad still thinking of buying a .17 hmr. have the opertunity to sell a .22 lr and a 12 bore to fund the .17 hmr and have the space on my ticket but just a bit nervous of blinding myself

Will be keeping my dads .22 as it has probably only had 300 rounds through it. Compared to my .22 which was second hand and old when i boughut it a few years ago. I hope to keep my dads 12 bore and sell mine as the only time i see mine is when i get the rifle out of the cabinet. Depending on how much i get for the two gun i will either go for a cz or would love a weihrauch hw 60 j. Picked one up when i sportsman on holiday and the bolt was like glass

Get rid of those faddy, dangerous .17 HMR's and buy a PROPER rimfire! .22WMR is the way forward (and you can even have it in semi-auto if you desire)

The two that got stuck and the split case this week was HORNADY Batch no B24RO2 WELL BOYS YOU GOT TO DO BETTER New gun and new rounds no rust its stainless steel.
We will all be giving statments to the insurance claim. when someone is hurt saying we told you this would happen. i just hope its not me.

Chaps,

After reading this thread i decided to check every round i have for shoulder/neck cracks!

I have 78 rounds of Hornady 17grn v-max blue tips and 250 rounds of 20grn CCI gamepoints (purchased recently)

I found 14 rounds with cracks which i have put to one side.

THEY WERE ALL HORNADYS!!!! Not a single problem with any of the CCI's. Im not sure if its the different brand or the fact that it is a heavier bullet but i will be sticking with the 20grainers from now on.

It does make me wonder though how many defective rounds i have put through my rifle without incident in the past as i always used hornadys for years without inspecting them???

Found a split case!

After my good friend got a 17hmr bullet stuck down his barrel and luckily realised that it did not sound right and check the barrel to see an obstruction, then i started checking my 17 ammo for split cases before use and today i found one! A Split at the neck and i easily pulled out the bullet from the case with my fingers, checked the powder to see if it was damp but looked ok! Thought it could not happen to me! Glad I checked and now I’ll continue,

This came up in another forum and I asked the poster "What are you going to do about it??" There was no decent reply. I suggested that you open the box at the dealer and inspect the ammo and hand the defective rounds back for an immediate discount. Sounds radical, but why should the ammo makers get away with it? and why should dealers continue to profit from defective product?? Maybe you need to hand back the entire box and ask for another, and if some defective rounds are found, ask for another... until you get a box with all the rounds intact. This is a stupid situation and as long as shooters are willing to Inspect and Soldier On, it won't stop any time soon. Personally? I'd sell/shelf the dammed HMR until they get the ammo thing straightened out. I don't like working myself into position for a shot and having the the round go squib.~Muir

This is what I am doing about it:

** HMR Ammunition Database - Please add your batch number to it **

no point moaning to your mates about it. everyone needs to add their batch numbers to a central resource.
hopefully any patterns will show up and allow people to vote with their wallets.

personally I think they are all crap quality, until people start taking them back or someone has the balls to sue the company for punitive damages when they get a squib followed by a live one, then nothing much will happen

hi guys i had similar two weeks ago several hang fires and then a squib all with split necks, so as soon as i got home i emailed hornady over in the states, a week later i got an email back saying they were sorry to hear of my problem with there ammo and would i mail them the batch no. and would i contact there UK distributor to let them see, no problem i said let me know who to contact and i will do. two days later i got a reply saying that there UK distributor is edgar bros. and they gave me a guys name to contact, this was on a carbon copy of an email telling him to contact me to swap my ammo. so as now i await said guy to contact me.
may i suggest the following - dont bother putting batch numbers on a list here, as soon as you have a split or similar problem email hornady direct yourself via there web site give them the batch number and tell them of the problem, keep all uffy cases etc and do not use anymore from that batch. its not on they know of the problem so tell them direct and hopefully things will quickly get sorted

kind regards
jimmy

No. You DO post the LOT numbers so that these get left on the shelf. If a dealer offers you some ammo, and you whip out your handy list of poison LOTS, you simply ask for a different LOT. If he doesn't have it say, "Thanks" and leave. Or ask when a different LOT is coming in. I know it's hard on you guys re: availability, but you must take a stand someplace. Bewsher5C has it right. You pay a lot for the stuff. Demand quality.~Muir

PS: Quickly sorted? The first split neck recall was over three years ago IIRC. Things haven't gotten much better yet.
