17 hornet ammo

Before I drop b----ck and buy a 17 hornet,as I don,t reload can any hornet users tell me what the consistency of factory rounds are like, what size groupings you get.

Iv got a stainless ruger in 17 hornet, ( wanted the slightly higher mag capacity and stainless barrel) , it was a genuine half inch @ 100yds gun, chopped the barrel to 19”, opened up barrel channel in stock so true free floating and sorted the crap ruger trigger out and has tightened groups up a tiny bit, very consistant performer though, only used 20gr factory hornady ammo and pretty much everything i shoot with it hates it, i tend to use it like a rimfire when “playing” though so can make your eyes water when you add the cost of rounds up after a session

I guess it all depends if your rifle likes the factory stuff, a couple others i know have cz and they group about the same, one slightly bigger, about 3/4” @ 100

My unmodified CZ527 shoots Hornady 20gr Vmax factory rounds into 1/2-3/4 moa five shot groups. Occasionally better but this is what it can do consistently.

It is better (and faster) with homeloads but for most of what I do, the factory Ammo is adequate.

Both CZs would only shoot factory ammo at just over 1moa. That's acceptable I suppose, but I prefer tighter than that. Homeloads have more than halved group sizes, but it has been fussier to develop a load than my other larger CFs.

I reload for my Hornet and am getting 3/4 inch groups which are not a great deal better than with Hornady factory ammo. Overall my CZ is a very accurate 230-yard rabbit and crow rifle with factory ammo.

A cracking rifle, particularly for summer shooting.

Same here I’ve been using hornady 20grn vmax for 6 years and it shoots thumbnail 5 shot groups all day long

I was flitting back and forth between a .17 hornet and a .204 I spoke to a few people and a fella that shoots one in a shop I go to.
The fella from the shop reckons it was more of a reloaders rifle as the rounds weren’t cheap for what they are if you treat it as a crow/rabbit rifle, the other fellas I know have no longer got them as they use their Hmr’s instead.
£24 for 20 rounds V £12.50 for 50 rounds.

I used to have a hmr,I got fed up of split cases and the safety issue was a concern for me so I bought a hornet!yea they are more expensive to run buying factory ammo but they are really a different league for carrion crows, foxes and rabbits.i can honestly say if I was going to swap it I would go for the .22 hornet Ackley with 30grn as they push the same speed but with a extra 10grns of weight but I don’t think il ever swap it to be honest,it’s my 100% daytime spring evening rifle

Someone’s mentioned the .17hmr
Query has the problems with split cases been resolved or still ongoing ?

Haven’t heard of it for a while

Not sure mate??the hmr has kind of went quiet??i dud year from a man in the trade that they couldn’t give them away so maybe people have moved onto different things?i know 100% I wish I had just bought the hornet first rather than messing in with the hmr

Hmr is a mouse gun.
If mice do well this summer they will be in demand again.....by some.

Iv shot more vermin wit the hmr than owt else iv got.it does the job brilliant. Just be careful with the Charlie's. Havnt had a case split for ages touch wood

My CZ grouped factory ammo pretty well. It's rare but I actually took a picture of one of my targets. Top three holes were my first attempt at home loading

I bought a couple of boxes of Hornady factory ammo with my CZ 527 - 17 H.

The rifle grouped approx. 0.75 moa at best. Home loading tightened groups up a lot.

I used to get 0.3" grouping all day with my 17 Hornet (windless days ;) ). You have to reload for his calibre to get the best from the round. Yes it can be fiddly, but still well worth it. I settled on 25 grain bullets. Not as fast as the 20s, but a greatly increased stopping power.
