17 Remington powders

Hi all, I’m currently using Vhit N135 in my 17 Remington (Sako 75) behind a 20gr Nosler Varmageddon. Accuracy isn’t up to where I want it to be. Looking at the other powders I have in my cabinet, I currently have RL10X and RL15 in there; these, apparently, having burn rates similar to N130 and N140 respectively, so within the range others are using.
Has anyone any experience with RL10X or RL15 in the 17 Remington using 20gr bullets?
Cheers

I am watching/following this post as I am in the same boat. I have used the last of my Varget. I too am contemplating using RL15 as that is what I have in the cabinet.

I use 25gr V-Max bullets and I am please with the outcome. My .17rem is becoming my go-to gun.

I found N135 to be best for me to be honest but that is with 25g Bergers. N133 gave me sudden pressure spikes and N140 was good for accuracy but slow.

I want to use the rifle for crows and rabbits with 20gr bullets; the lighter, faster and more frangible the better. I’ve a 204R & 22H too as my main foxing rifles so don’t feel the need for 25gr bullets. However, if I can’t get the 20gr Nosler to shoot accurately, I could try the Bergers. I’ve put some 20 & 25gr V-Max through it with the N135 and not had very good results; the Noslers were definitely better @ around 1” but not as accurate as I’d like.

Interesting on the N133, I’m using N135/25grn Bergers in my .17R too and a couple of years ago I suddenly got a pressure spike on a not particularly hot August day zeroing a new scope, I had to knock the bolt handle open and this was half-way through a 100 batch of ammo that had been fine all the way through from February. Same load as 4 previous batches...

I’m using N133 in my .20Prac and having trouble with that leaving a very wet residue after a shot which is staining to leaving verdigris on the bullet of the next round up the spout. This is ongoing as to why and I had a look down the mod with a Teslong borescope the other day to find a lot of flame cutting, which leads me to consider that it’s not getting the best burn rate out of the powder.

I use the same OneLessCharlie make of moderator on the .17Rem, same 22” length of barrel and the baffles on that are fine.....as are the bullets of the next round in the chamber after a shot. I was running figures through Borbal’s ballistic calculator and Viht N130 was showing a slightly better burn rate at 95% over N133’s 92%.

Perhaps its Viht that’s inconsistent? Bring back Hodgdon’s.

Good this reloading lark ain’t it 🤣

It can be an unforgiving calibre to be sure!! I wondered if there was sufficient fouling deposited to change chamber pressure. I now use abrasive barrel polishes on the 17 every 50-60 rounds or so

I had a .17Rem at the time the only available bullet was the 25 grain Hornady. I used RL 15 behind it to very good effect. The powder gave constant results. The terminal bullet performance was fantastic 19 times out of 20. Then you would get an occasional issue.
