That's old school thinking. I started my flat coat at 8 weeks - the day I got him. At 6 months he's turning into a champ.
Otherwise you've got a dog whose learned that he can do bugger all and get away with it. Try training that out!

It’ll be interesting to see how he is at 18/24 months

I think basic training should start from day 1, this will help the dog bond with you .
once a dog can sit and stay still and understand that not everything is a game then the boundaries are clear and the rest of the training I believeshould happen when the dog is ready . Step by step.
Like people , each dog is different and I think you need to work with there needs and focus.
