17hmr or .17 hornet

Yes and no, they are relatively close together, compared to say .22 LR with subs and a 7 mm rem mag
At 150y a 120kg deer shot behind the shoulder with a 223 is out of breath instantly, I've been witnessing that since school age. Reading this thread some say they aren't comfortable shooting a 5kg fox at the same distance with the 17hmr. For me they are closer to your 22lr 7mm comparison than they are together.

No your not understanding , re read without adding anything
Energy in the bullet at the time of impact dictates the ricochet potential , very very rarely do you hear a CF ricochet because the bullet has to be slower than the speed of sound for the ricochet to be audible . Rimfire subs ? you hear
when you get a CF ricochet , you really dont know about it occurred till it impacts on something you really didn't want it to hit OR just ocasionally over a field of wet grass a rooster tail lifts of spray . I have yet to hear a " ZIIIING" like happens when a 22 subsonic ricochet occurs.
Look at range certification procedures for collaboration Muzzle Energy limits are set as a major factor on what can be used
Sorry, really don't agree with this.
I've heard a fair few, most recent Zing from a CM only a couple of weeks ago, and have heard it from a .270 110gr TTSX that went through a stag at 80yds and bounced off the edge of a rock, there is no way that the bullet was subsonic given that it left the muzzle at 3450fps.
I've also heard them from .204, .222, 22-250, 6.5x55 SE, .243 and .308.
Rare, maybe, but only when subsonic, nope.

sorry but supersonic ricochets are simply not audible only subsonic ones

My main foxing rifle at the moment is a HMR.
Not had an issue nore lost one. I just try and keep the range down and 90% of the time shoot them across the ribs.
I've shot them with a 22, WMR, hornet, 222, 243, 6.5, 270, 308 and 357. It's no different except there is no more pressure to shoot when I see one a 300yds, I just get closer or turn up another time.
It's just bigger is better syndrome.
I've probably seen more foxes educated by missed long shots with centerfires than I have with rim fires!
Last night's 133 paces 🤷

Fine if you are shooting on smallish fields, but I can imagine a conversation with one of my Farmers who had called me up because of a Fox problem.

Farmer, "Did tha get it?"

Self, "No, saw it down in the bottom field of Spring Barley, spotted it through the Thermal and looked through the digi NV scope with the IR torch, it was as clear as day, really big Dog Fox in cracking condition at about 240 -250yds".

Farmer "Why didn't tha shut t' buggr?"

Self, "I took my HMR and couldn't get any closer, never mind, I'll pop down again next week and might get a bit luckier".

Farmer, "thal do nowt ot sort, now buggr off an i'll get somon in to doo't job raight".

Get some one else then you miserable bastard....would be my reply.
Fortunately my farmers are more appreciative and know I will get it/them. They know it's the size of the man and not his gun or rifle!

It's those Yorkshire farmers that Lancaster has to deal with SD, hard to please....
I've had it happen down ere. " No my gamekeeper friend says he'll sort them out". Six months later you are asked back because the place is over run with well educated fox's.
Knob eds....
