17hmr vs 22 hornet

Thinking of a short range foxing rifle, I already have a 17hmr but my experience over the years has shown it to be a little underpowered for Foxes. Would a 22 Hornet be a better choice and how do the 2 compare in noise levels ?. Its for use in smaller paddocks around houses where my 22 250 has just too much bark .

I'd use a .22Hornet out of the two. I use mine a lot around the edge of the village and amongst the nooks & crannies on the farm, never had a complaint yet, drops foxes ok with good shot placement.

Lovely calibre for up to 150yds on fox. Any further is a no for me.

A pleasure to walk with on my shoulder as well.
I have a couple of houses close to one of my permissions, never had an issue with the 22H & noise signature

I use a CZ527 22 hornet as my dedicated foxing rifle and shoot about 100 a year with it. Not much louder than the hrm (have never had noise complaints) much better in the wind and very good on Foxes out to about 170 yard, it starts dropping off a bit after that.

In my view, it's a reloaders calibre, if you don't reload I definitely wouldn't recommend it as the factory ammo is pretty poor.

I sold my Anschutz 1517 HMR for a CZ527 for the same reason. Haven’t regretted it for a moment. Better for longer range rabbits and perfect for the occasional fox < 200 yards with 40gr V-Max homeloads

Ive shot a lot of foxes with the .17hmr , shot placement is the issue especially if it’s windy, I’ve just got the .22 hornet like Hendrix a CZ527, only shot one so far and think it’s a better round for the job. No noise issues and getting just over an inch group at 100 yards. Just picked up 50 rounds of Winchester 40grains ammo cost £57, so think I’ll be going down the home loading route.

.22 Hornet is ok out to 200yds on foxes, if you use 13gr Lilgun and 45 gr Sierra sps. Use to use one with 46 gr Winchester hollow points on deer years ago. Cracking Roe rifle to 150 yds, and at 100yds Fallow didn't like it much either, I thought it great and it did the job that old BSA. A pity it's not deemed suitable for small deer now. But as a fox and Rabbit or Hare tool great.

I have both, not much in it noise wise but the hornet hits a LOT harder and will put foxes down with more confidence. Much better calibre for fox in my opinion.

This is the sole reason I haven't replaced my HMR with a .22H. And I'm one of those odd people who actually likes his HMR.

(Nowadays could be a .17H of course, but the .22 has a wider rifle choice and I've got fat fingers and worsening eyesight for reloading).
