.204 vs .220

Suggest you do that Tom, then apologise to every 220 swift owner in the world. You can't throw a smaller weight at a lower velocity and end up in front. The 220 swift is still the best 22 cal on the planet. I know nothing about 20 cal rifles so I have nothing to say, except that I am sure they do that it says on the tin. My swift will do 4300 fps with 40 gn bullets. J

My apologies to all the 220 shooters out there... When transferring from phone to iPad some loads had switched to a g7bc....the difference did seem a little stark even with my .204 tinted glasses on!

So yes the 220 is not as bad as all that, but the 204 still beat is it out long even though it starts off slower.

Tom, you're comparing a sleek .20 bullet with a stubby .22 bullet - of course the results will be skewed in favour of the .204.

Shoot a decent 53-55gr bullet in the .220 and the trajectory will compare very favourably with the .204 (with the .220 carrying more energy).

I shoot a .220 Swift for the nostalgia of it and as a tribute to those that came before me. Every time I go hunting with the Swift, I think to myself, wow, this thing came out in 1935! It is still the King in my book.

Of course the heavy for calibre bullets will have better BC's, I did say earlier that the 80gn Vmax would fare better against the .204.. I picked 40 gn because that's what has been mentioned throughout the thread.

FWIW I'd love a go with a 220, I'm not knocking it, but I think that for realistic foxing ranges the 204's are great, and they do everything with less powder and less recoil and less barrel wear. I wouldn't swap mine for anything...

Even my little Vartarg which can only chuck the 39/40gn bullets at 3450fps or so still has better ballistics than the 220 swift with a 50gn. the 39 sierras that I use are carrying 528lbft of energy at 500yds, and thats from 18.9gn of powder, probably half what you'd use in the 220!

Plus it shoots groups like the one above, .247 moa....

I used a 20 Vartarg for around 4 years and like Ian, don't think your ballistic calculator is correct.
Todd kindler is well known for his optimistic findings.

Spot on Rory.

We could go on and on about the ballistic advantages of one over the other but the bottom line is there is nothing between them as far as wind drift and bullet drop goes. The 204 has less recoil and is more pleasant to shoot, the 220 swift kicks a bit more but is still mild enough and it does hit harder. Both will kill fox sized animals easily.

Ah the dreaded recoil word rears its head.

The Swift doubles the 204 recoil energy @ a shoulder bruising, hair blowing, nasal bleeding, tooth grinding 5.3 foot pounds.
If anyone cites that as a reason to not have one then they would be better served by a BSA Airsporter!
One thing is that the Swift will shoot far heavier bullets and thus be of far more value for heavier game than the light weight little 204 pills.

BTW TomD those figures highlighted are not equally the same for each calibre,it seems that you are only picking figures to suit.

Lol at above post, true though, the swift is more versatile, from silly velocity light varmint bullets to heavier soft points for small game if so allowed in your part of the country/world etc. My only gripe with the .204 is that at longer range that little .20 cal bullet just doesn't carry the oommph of the .22 cal, and yes iam speaking from experience, from shooting a lot of foxes, at varying ranges etc. Not knocking the .204, i love mine, just being realistic.

I'm not sure where the highlighting came from, I think it maybe the point where it goes subsonic... I didn't pick them out, I think the app does that...

re recoil, it's not about the pain, these are varmint calibres at the end of the day, it's just nice to be able to see the shot strike..

On on the other hand if you want a do it all calibre (small deer and vermin) then the .22's are obviously the winners. I have a dedicated deer rifle so I don't really need my vermin gun any bigger...

You made a good choice. You don't need the extra energy of the swift for foxes. I shot a lot of foxes with the swift at night and rarely seen a hit through the scope. With the 204 I see every fox drop which is more fun.
Ffs!!! The 220 would get some good feedback when I've just ordered a 204!!!

Both will do the job, just go with what you prefer and get out and start killing them foxes and enjoying your rifle,

oh and i can see the strike through my scope from my swift aswell, it is a big heavy lump of a rifle tho.

I was looking at a .204 earlier this year but after speaking to a gunsmith friend he advised to go for a 22-250, I have to admit I'm glad I did as when that Muntjac appeared from the hedge last month I was able to take the shot.

Hi. Can I just ask a related question as we are talking about the 204. I've been thinking about getting a 204 for a while now. My mate has a 220 swift and it's a great round. For some reason I had it in my head the .204 wasn't far off a 17 or 22 but it sounds like the 204 is nearer to a 220 swift. So can I expect a lot of meat damage if I were to use it for rabbits over the 17 and it would be as noisey as a 220 swift?

Of course the heavy for calibre bullets will have better BC's, I did say earlier that the 80gn Vmax would fare better against the .204.. I picked 40 gn because that's what has been mentioned throughout the thread.

Tom, What bullet BC are you using for the 39SBK's mate?

Steve

I have had my .204 about 1 year and its a fantastic bit of kit, with 39grn Blitz kings it is just lethal. Incredibly accurate esp with a high mag scope. Its go to rifle for foxs and vermin. No recoi,l dumps all energy on target no worry about richochets, very quiet. It is light and absolute pleasure to shoot. More importantly instills confidence in its owner. Best rifle I own.
