.22-243 Middlestead, Ultimate For Fox?

Brian i know a fella who uses one he reccons its the dogs danglies, i will find his no out for you and bring it to the fair.

I looked into all these fancy custom chamberings when I was having my foxing rifle made, in the end the real world performance differnces vs the increased hassle of case prep and fire forming, even a 22-250AI is not in reality much faster than a standard one, when you include the fact that my FEO won't let me have vermin on anything above 22 means that I stuck with a conventional chambering.

22-250 with a 26" barrel firing 53gr V-Max at 3800 fps really gets the job done and using Lapua brass straight out the box really cuts down the time spent at the reloading bench which is a big bonus as I really don't enjoy it all that much.

Jamross.
How about the .243 Catbird as the ultimate Fox Cartridge? 70 Grain Bullet touching 4100fps.

Yorkie.

PS
Kenny Jarret who developed this Cartridge says Barrels are good for 1500 rounds before Accuracy tails off.

Now that would be fun!!

"The .243 Catbird was conceived to be an ultra-long range 6mm varmint round, but also works quite well for a deer cartridge. It is a .270 Winchester case necked down to .243 and blown out with a 35 degree shoulder. This case is delivering some impressive velocities. Our original goal was to get 4000 f.p.s. with a 68-70 gr. bullet. However, we surpassed this goal with 4100 f.p.s. We were able to achieve 3800 f.p.s. with an 85 gr. bullet and 3500 f.p.s. with a 95 gr. Nosler Partition. This cartridge packs plenty of punch for long range varmint hunting or medium range deer hunting.Cases for this chambering are quite easy to form. You simply run a .270 Win. case through a Catbird full length sizing die, load it with a reduced load and fire-form it by simply shooting it through your gun. There are two versions of this cartridge. One of them has a tight neck and the other has a standard neck. The cases for the tight necked version must be neck turned before they can be loaded and fired. Once cases have been fire-formed for either version they can be reloaded as any other cartridge. While this cartridge may not be for everybody, many people will love the high velocity and the accompanying flat trajectories that can be achieved. This round may be the fastest 6mm cartridge ever developed. Of course, you have to give something to get something. She is a “barrel eater” — expect about 1500 rounds of good accuracy."

22 creedmoor is pretty Popular just now 4000 fps with a 55 grain or 20x47 lapua we built a few 4400 fps with a 40 grain bullet and a 20 in barrel is easy
I use a 20 ppc with 4065 fps with a 40 grain

I don't know - and I'm not going to find out :)
Although there were absolutely no signs of over pressure, the barrel isn't going to last long with the load I used to get that speed, so I'm going back something a lot more sensible - like 50g VMax at 3700fps :)

Cheers

Ah shame that would have been interesting I have quite the itch for a fast twist 250 or swift 😅

Anyone on here any experience with this chambering?

I have read a few threads about ultimate foxing set ups, .204, .20 TAC, 22-250 plus a few others. But when you look at the following figures, and especially when they still produce good accuracy this would appear to me to be about the ultimate based on figures alone. I would guess they are a bit harder on barrels though. I would also guess that the case prep would put some off.

Here is just one example but there are lots on the web.

I have a 243 that I may re-barrel at some point as a dedicated fox rifle and have to say that this is drawing me...
