.22 hornet popularity?

Hi all

I was out the other night with a mate and his .22 Hornet.
I had my.22lr but the scope was off so we just used his hornet.
In my opinion they are a very good round. Accurate and not too loud when moderated.
Rabbits just sat there!
Why aren’t these more popular?

He had 2 17 hmr before and didn’t get on well with them. This is a much better round for accuracy and kills very well.

I'm currently in a state of kicking my self very hard in the arse as I didn't buy the stunning and VGC brno ZKW 65 22H with full irons and hood and the whole thing for £365...went back two weeks ago to finally commit and they were sending it out to its new owner that same day...f**K......

Indeed , usefull for small pests and fox. I too have had a brace of HMRs and would go Hornet every time. Reload for pennies.

I have had a CZ and HW60j, CZ was good HW great.

The irony of your post is they've never been more popular in the UK than now.

When I first purchased one in 1977 they seemed to have a reputation that suggested the owner enjoyed a challenge but in hindsight that had more to do with a mentor who insisted on trying to make a delightful Winchester Low Wall, with Parker insert barrel, shoot like a Brno.

And cheaper to reload for than buying 17HMR ammo

Cheers

I had a CZ527 in 22H for years, the barrel was pitted to hell but shot super accurately. Very capable round

Scratch the itch and get one.

Great little round , I foolishly traded a beautiful little Martini clambered in 22 Hornet . I'm always looking for a replacement . Some people look down on them , but I've always had a thing for the older break action single shots like H&R and Savage 219's . They weigh nothing and were made for woods walking . It's just a handy little cartridge .

I have a 22 hornet barrel for my H&R Handirifle along with a 357 Magnum and another handi in 45-70.
Fun little rifle to shoot and carry around like you stated. Can't use it for small game as that is rimfire only but should be good for bobcats and close range coyotes along with nutrias, beavers, and armadillos.
There is a guy from Texas on the Utube that hunts big game with a 22 hornet.

I also had a nice .22H, a Weihrauch HW Jag. Lovely rifle, just way too heavy. Although I also regret getting rid of mine....
I've also been tempted by the .17 Hornet. Does anyone know the stats between the 2 on wind drop/and drift?
I've got an itch to got one or the other but not sure???

the hornets, in either .17 or .22 are hugely popular and have replaced a lot of HMRs up and down the country

.17 winds on drop and drift, though the .22 shooting 40 gr tipped bullets isn't far behind, .22 wins on power

Have had a 22 hornet for over 40 years. Cracking little round.

Snap!.. Though not quite so long as I bought mine as new in 1986. Had it converted to the .22 Kilburn Hornet around 1990 but the change in velocities was not worth the price. However the case life has increased a might which, cos of the really thin brass has never been great. That all said, my .22K-Hornet has been my go-to rifle for most of my lamping against rabbit and fox and kills them dead inside of my personally enforced 150yd max range -with a very occasional fox just a bit longer if the presentation is too good to pass up!

My lamping chummy, a local farmer, has a long barreled .17 HMR and I outshoot him regularly with 100% kills that he cannot do despite being a great shot himself, to such an extent that he now regularly lets foxes go for me to put down rather than take them on himself with occasional wounding being the result...

I too LOVE my .22 Hornet!!

ATB ...... and shoot safely

I have an old brno zkw465 (1949 I believe ), meopta scope and moderator, homeloaded 40grn ammo, I LOVE this rifle and have taken everything from magpies to foxes with it, yes I have faster and flatter 22 centrefires but it is my go to fox rifle on our small syndicate ground.

.22 hornet was the estate rifle when I was a beat keeper 25 years ago and we were expected to do it all with that on3 calibre which to its credit it did and probably stood me in good stead for the 243 a calibre also frowned on by some members lol .
