Popped out for a couple of hours last night on a R&R outing and armed with the 22 hornet and slipped up first fox come in to hand squeak to 80 lovely first one accounted for 👍. Next one 170 yds left it next one 200 🥹 left em both and cursed should have bought to 204 or the 222
Hornet is DOB on at a 100 and perfect out to that 100%
I just don’t like pushing the boundaries for a humane shot anyone shooting the hornet further with no problems
Missed out on two last night 😱

When I had one I used it on foxes out to circa 175yards and Im sure it would have killed further out but like all things the further you push it the more chance of somthing going wrong hence I would say 150 yards is about the limit

I agree with Sir L-A-L. 150 yards is about the max I would use my hornet on a fox. I've knocked over rabbits a bit further than that but a fox is a different proposition.

Beware the Man who owns but one rifle!

I've always seen the 22 Hornet as a 100 yard chambering but like others, with deliberation and a kind wind have taken fox at greater distance.

The sweet spot for me and the Hornet is 80-120 over bait usually, 150 is about my max, although I have killed foxes cleanly out to 200yards, but not many, just have to be aware of your drops, which is not a problem with your others as we know

I have stopped taking the old Hornet out as much, a couple of years ago the love affair ended one winter, I snouted two about a month apart, they both dipped their heads looking directly at me as I took the shot, quick follow up on one sorted that, but the other one went down and I thought it was a fatal shot, I walked out to pick it up and scanned round with the thermal and thought bugger me another fox has arrived, quickly to realise the one I shot was up and walking around in circles... it ended up being a messy situation.
Then on another very windy night, I had a look in the nooks & crannies area of the farm but noticed a pair doing the love Waltz on a big windswept harvested sugar beet field, it took me ages to walk out to them in the moonlight, got busted by them at 150, took a shot but didn't allow enough for wind drift, happened again 15 minutes later when the other one returned... so I generally take the .223 and lob 60 grain Vmax at everything.
Love the Hornet for sniping rabbits though, and if Freddy pops up it's like revisiting old times, certainly honed my field craft using the .22 Hornet.

Anything over 180yds I put the crosshairson top of foxes shoulders and let the bullet drop in, zeroed at 100ys with 35gr vmax

How do you find the knockdown, in mine they did shoot well, but the knockdown is pretty poor I moved to Winchester 50 grn soft point and that disapeared under a 100 yds, a runner is a rarity nowadays with the hornet

I shoot 35 grn Hornady v max in the 222 and it flattens a fox as does the 204, bullet weights aren’t that far apart its velocity is the reason i keep to a 100 , lovely little calibre

Only ever had one runner with the hornet and it was gutted! Never had a runner with17 hornet, shot 50gr blitzkings in 222 and they dropped to the shot, no runners with 204 either with 39gr blitzkings

I had a 17 hornet for a while, best long range rifle out there for rabbits, it didn’t fair toooooo well on foxes, a shame but I wouldn’t considerate as a fox rifle, but phenomenal on rabbits over 150-200 mtrs absolute stonker of a caliber 👍

We shot foxes out to200yds with it,we're limited to 22 centrefires for foxes over here, so you have to make the most of what's about.
It is my opinion that too many people given the choice would opt for larger calibres for foxes and rely on the extra horsepower to kill them rather than accuracy.

I’ve gone out to 150y with mine and would do so again quite happily. I’ve shot it on targets out to 300y but there was quite a drop there so I wouldn’t go that far with live quarry out of choice.
