Zero Check Following a Knock

You are correct most don’t!

I don’t my rifle comes out of the cupboard only if I’m going stalking or I’m checking zero I don’t waste ammunition I don’t need to, that is down to experience
I think from past posts you put plenty of deer in the larder - I was meaning the recreational stalker going out a few times a year….

You make a good point and it’s reinforced by the lack of access to gun ranges or suitable ground. I fire three to check zero as a wounded animal is the worst outcome for me. I don’t sell my deer, but for those that do, I would have thought shot placement would be the highest priority for minimal meat damage and a clean kill - well covered in recent threads across the SD. I wish more farmers would “diversify” and create ranges or paid access that we could pay to shoot on, but I recognise that’s not what farms are for and there are safety and insurance implications. It just might make deer control a bit more accessible and wider spread. Probably not a popular view, but there we are. I’m grateful for those that enable me to participate in our field sport.
I was thinking the same. Anyone local to me welcome to have a zero free with me if they are insured.

This summer I brought my 30-06 over from Austria, I have two scopes on QR Sauer mounts. As I had the 1-4 x 20 on for a running boar tutorial, when I swapped back to my old stalking scope I spent an hour at the range, put obout 65 shots through it up to 250m then checked the new ammo, bang on 2cm group at 100m so shooting a little lower than my heavier bullets. Ammo used was 139gr, 150gr and 175gr target and apart from a touch of holdover no scope adjustment was required. Quite lucky there. So that's 125 rounds practice this summer, off out now after CWD in the mud 😀

Honestly 2 clicks can be a lot of things wind shooter error extra layers so forth. Decent equipment should take the odd clatter and it will make absolutely no difference. Also most people zero with three shots which will inevitably lead to “wandering zero” as three shots do not show your zero at all.
2 clicks doesn’t have to have anything at all to do with shooter or conditions.

A 1MOA gun can very easily generate 2 clicks or error every shot.

If all the screws are the right torque and you have a decent scope it will take a lot of punishment. I never check my zero unless I have reason to do so, e.g. shot placement isn't what I'd expect.

Sometimes I'm out morning and evening for days. Checking your zero before each outing isn't practical, it's costly and another opportunity to knock your rifle off zero.
this .... i check zero if something is wring would be impossible to check it every time im out 2-3 days a week

I don’t check my zero at all unless I change my bullet.
Quality rings and bases made out of steel, combined with a proven EU made rifle scope shouldn't lose zero with a knock. I’ve dropped my rifles multiple times with no issue at all later on. I known a stalker who dropped a rifle off a high seat and had a dent in the front bit of the scope and rifle was shooting OK afterwards.
In my experience people tend to blame rifles or ammo when they miss.

Holding on top before or after anyone noticed it had come loose??
I was pretty mad he shot a hind in the neck then shot the calf and the scope rolled off the top off the rifle. The hind looked to get up as the bullet missed bone and the head stalker said try to shoot it by looking down the barrel. 3 shots later no luck and empty mag. The stalker said reload the mag and then repositioned the scope on the rifle he fired and it fell off again and missed. Then the stalker and him held the scope on and they dispatched the hind once and for all. Sako 85 I think.

That is insane.

What sort of range?

70m so not so bad. Thing is he didn’t install the scope it was the shop he bought it from that he’s been in touch with now. He’s a very competent and experienced shot and had shot 6 hinds the day before on his permission with it and probably 100 deer with the gun over the last 1 1/2 years of ownership.
