Deja Vu,another sad ending for a fine old beast.

Different circumstances today but again a sad action to carry out.

Had only went to check a few cameras and where i parked i could just make out what i thought were two lugs sticking through the wheat now and again and presumed it was a doe.Checked with the bins and saw it was just the last few inches of antler beams and recognised them straight away as a fine beast who i was hoping the Irish lads would fall in with if they come across.
Just sat away watching with him maybe 120m away and a couple of times i got his back moving and thought something wasn't right so decided to have a walk over with the dog just to make sure.Hadn't taken the rifle but had the butchering knife so took it in case.

Slow approach but soon realised a fit beast wouldn't be allowing this so when i got within 10m i took a vid to try and see which way he was facing as by this time he was totally couched and managed to make out he was facing me so as soon as close enough i managed to grab an antler although i did let go when he rose.Luckily he only went 5m in a scramble and straight down so got on him and seen straight away the damage to the leg so the knife was the best option.
Thought at first maybe wires but skinning the back end showed bad bruising on the haunches so would say a motor.
Unreal to get 2 in a week but good to be able to have them spotted and dealt with instead of them suffering a lot longer.

A really good example of deer management being so much more than just going on to ground with a rifle.
Taking time to establish deer numbers, density and habitual behaviour specific to your ground reaps the rewards.
Unfortunate circumstances for a stunning buck which has no doubt benefited from @sako751sg deer feeding stations and excellent Roe deer habitat.
Will be an interesting head to see measured, that’s some antler length and the mass looks decent, be interesting to see what buck takes over the vacant territory.

This was who was taken less than 10m where i had to deal with this poor lad, taken during last year's rut.

Once again well done and well observed.

Can you imagine a non hunter being so diligent and prepared and prepared to face some risk do do the right thing?
I think not. Well played 😎
Cheers SD.
Incredibly lucky for both beasts to be visible for sure but as you say most of the general public wouldn't have clue how to act accordingly which is just the way things are these days.More chance of getting slated for the "brutality" in doing the right thing than them actually acknowledging it was the correct thing.
