22 WMR Subsonic Ammo

I have 22lr and 17hmr but looking for one rifle 22wmr and wonder if anyone has come across subsonic ammo. Need a quiet rifle on odd occasions

Surely if you reduce the speed of a WMR round to the point where it becomes subsonic it must then perform the same as a 22lr, i would have thought that no matter what cartridge you use to push a 30-40g bullet at subsonic speeds the muzzle energy therefore the terminal effect on your target
would be the same if not very similar?

Also lately i have been using cci supressor in 22lr which is also 45gr hp . It is very accurate and penetrates rabbits every time.

2 WMR, one night vision and one normal scope. both then capable of High Velocity and Subsonic. Just looking at availability of Subsonic Ammo and any experience of both HV and sub ammo.
This gives you the option to switch when in the field. Out Rabbiting with subs and fox appears you can reload with HV.

Not to mention split cases using 22LR in a 22 WMR chamber. I saw some of the Winchester 22 Mag subsonic ammo and also thought what was the point to pay double the price of 22LR when you can use CB Longs or CCI 22 Quiets or the 22LR Standard velocity ammo but as has been indicated when carrying one rifle and need something quiet for dispatch at close range or a heavier bullet at subsonic. The CB Longs use the 22 short 29gr bullet and the Quiets use a 40gr bullet both at 750fps.
I had set up my 22LR to sight in with CB Longs and regular ammo shot 1" (2.54cm) higher than that. Worked perfectly on squirrels and would shoot completely through at 30 yards and quieter than a pellet rifle (without moderator one either). A moderator on a 22 mag will quiet it down to the noise level of a regular 22LR without moderator.

Where do

Where did you get the cb longs out of interest

Thanks Matt

Well, I live in Louisiana in the USA so I can get them at the local Academy Sports store along with the CCI Quiets.
They also make CB Shorts which have the same power but use the 22 Short case. The longs will feed in the LR magazines.
I modify mine a bit with a small file and put a small flat on the Round nose bullet so it whacks the game harder.
I also have a Small Game Bullet tool with a die and base that you put LR rounds in and file a flat on the nose with the same amount taken off each round and it whacks game harder so it's makes it more useful for larger game such as raccoons, armadillas, opposums or even Bobcats. Makes the bullet like a SWC. Not enough power to cycle an autoloader but makes it into a straight pull action. Feeds fine through bolt actions or most of them anyways. I like the Quiets better with the 40gr bullet vs. a 29gr bullet in the CB Longs.
I've shot the Aguila Kolibri rounds but they have an even smaller weight bullet at around 450-500fps and in my estimation are suffient for not so dead mice caught in traps. My Benjamin Discovery PCP .22 has more power but it's a 25ft lb gun. A .177 rifle at 800fps has more power.

Try to find Winchester 22 WRF ammo. They don't make runs of it often, but it is (iirc) a 45 grain bullet at about 1400 fps. Functions fine in bolt avtion 22WMR. Might be quieter.~Muir

While I wait (and wait and wait) for my variation for 22LR to come through, has anyone seen any 22WMR subsonic in a UK gunshop?

I could do with a quieter option.

Have you tried using a .22 centrefire moderator, rather than a rimfire moderator? I have a DPT rimfire mod that I use on my .22LR and WMR barreels. But ”discovered“ that it is the same thread as the DPT centrefire mod for my .222 Rem. I tried the larger mod on the WMR, and the sound came down to .22LR levels. Not quite .22 subsonic, but at least as good as normal .22LR, perhaps a bit better.

My concern is rimfire use can coke up a 223 mod.

high quality problem to have, IMO: I’ll let you know when/if it occurs!
I am shooting, not plinking, so the round count is in the tens, not hundreds.
And I assume the OP’s requirement is similar, hence the enquiry about “a quiet rifle on odd occasions”

So there's no 22WMR subs about, but hey no bother because the kind people at Devon and Cornwall Firearms processed my variation and I picked up a 22LR Ruger. So, it's been Digex on, Wildcat Whisper on and a box of CCI subs.

I'd almost forgotten the challenge and fun of looping ballistics with a rifle that makes a sound like Tinkerbell gently farting into a feather pillow. No more .22 Wammers booming, no more .17 Wissums screaming, waking up every nervous dog, delicate child and anti-hunting keyboard warrior in the area, just one pleased farmer with fields over-run with over-fed rabbits.

Courtesy to my neighbours was the reason for wanting 22WMR subs and this 22LR solves that quite nicely. The added bonus is with it being another Ruger Precision, my wife won't notice the new rifle, it's a win-win-win all round.

There's only one question left to answer, should I go for a Precision in 17 Hummer?
