22LR or 17HMR

Another vote for getting both because they each have their plus points. The 17HMR is flatter shooting and I find I don't have to think too much about aiming whereas the 22 subs need a bit of range and holdover considerations. This evening I've been on the rabbits with the HMR at ranges around 70m with no holdover adjustments, if I'd been using the 22LR subs, I'd be aiming half an ear up for headshots, the HMR no holdover.

I have a 22WMR but mine is louder than the HMR. Rabbits end up several metres from where you hit them! I'll have to check out 22WMR subs when I can find them in stock.

I love rimfires because the ammo is low cost, dare I suggest you have a look at 17WSM? 500fps faster than the HMR. I zero mine at 50m, it's 30mm up at 100m and back on zero at 140m. And it's quiet-ish and will humanely do foxes up to 100m.
Interesting thoughts I know lots of mates who have both actually and I definitely agree there is reasons to have both. I will most certainly looking into 17WSM also.
Given me even more to think on haha :)

I only put in for 22 which I suppose was silly didn’t want to come across greedy lol
But I’m actual fact I’ve probably made a mistake not giving myself the option for both. Don’t think they’d have any trouble giving me the variation, but perhaps that’s optimistic after hearing some of the things going on. Still have confidence in the local firearms officer though he did seem pretty sensible. Fingers crossed if I do decide to go for another.

HMr, I sold my 22 once Lead ban was obvious, non toxics spit everywhere, hornady non tox hmr However is superb!

However, I’m now considering FAC air if air rifles are indeed exempt from ban as has been mooted.

I hate these treads about 22lr lead ban, every time they come up...
I ordered an Anschutz 1710 for my 40th birthday in a few months..

Would hate to see it reduce its usefulness with a lead ban..

Couldn’t agree more would be a right shame! However hopefully that will be limited and if not I hope some rounds will eventually get developed that shoot well and perhaps even subsonic 👍🏻

Black one, 22LR with 40g subs and Wildcat Whisper mod for quiet shooting up to 50m.The impact makes more noise than the round. Cerakote one is 17hmr, 17g for ones that appear further down the field. (120m).

Get both then get a pipe. (see the pipe thread) 🙂

Like the look that Ruger is it a precision…
I’ll take a look 👍🏻 and two small caliber rifles is definitely on the cards.

Currently awaiting my FAC to arrive.

Decided I really want a 22LR after using both 17HMR and 22LR. Love subsonic and works well for the ground I’ll be shooting.
However I’m concerned about the dreaded lead ban and if I will still be able to use lead/subsonic rounds for hunting? I suppose no one can tell the future.
But my question is are we likely see any sort of exemption or am I being too sensible/optimistic 22LR seems to have no decent alternatives correct me if I’m wrong or would I perhaps be better off buying a 17? 22LR is already on my ticket when arrives so I’ll have to get a v
A cheap .22 is normally something you can pick up, someone is always selling one or knows someone selling one cheap. I have personally shot a .17 out (takes some doing yes) so if you were going to get 1 new rifle.make it the .17 in my opinion. Iv got both and ge really the .22 doesn't leave the cabinet. Just my opinion thougj

I have both and use both but probably more the 22lr. Some forces are trying to sway shooters to the 17HMR due to ricochets chances of the 22 so i don't think you will have problem getting one added later

The simple answer from me is both, the 22lr a epic round with a multitude of uses especially being sun sonic, but when the little extra bit of punch and accuracy is needed the hmr is very hard to beat. I own both and of I had to choose between them to part with one for some silly reason I would let go of the 22lr first I think.

I've never had decent accuracy from HV rounds, they go transonic at around 100yds whereas the 17HMR is leaviong the barrel at over 2500 fps and not going transonic until way past 200yds.
I think we definitely will need some subsonics non toxic perhaps tungsten…
But fingers crossed the .22 will be exempt 🤷🏻‍♂️
