22lr shotshell

So I've been using a cheap spring air rifle shooting rats.
I've thought about trying the 22lr with subs but just don't have the safe backstop as much as I'd like.

I've heard of these 22lr shotshell rounds, have anyone got any reviews about them ?
Anyone around East Sussex have a few spare I could try before maybe buying some in bulk ?

To be blunt the rats are more likely to die from being out all night in a heavy fall of rain than from the effects of being shot at with a .22LR shotshell! Even more so if fired through a rifled arm. Yes they are that bad! I had a Webley .22LR bolt action shotgun maybe fifty plus years ago. Quite useless. If you've the correct authority to use your rifle on vermin then I'd suggest either CB Long or Zimmer Patrone type cartridges.

BEST RAT MEDICINE? A DECENT QUALITY PCP AIR RIFLE. And unlike the guys on You Tube shoot the rats through the shoulders (so taking out the heart and lungs and in any case immobilising it) and use a .22 calibre PCP. Although having just written that my own PCP is a .177 BSA Scorpion T-10 used with Bisley Magnum. Why .177? As I want it also for use on woodpigeons for body shots and a sub 12 ft/lbs air rifle .22 just doesn't have enough penetration. On squirrels I use head shots and a .177 or a .22 works well. The .177 usually shoots through whereas the .22 usually stays in the skull but delivers a massive cracking effect to the skull itself.

Worked well for me at short range for rats and snakes out of a 22lr rifle.
TAKBOK I almost wrote but then didn't that in the USA the .22 Shotshell is considered good snake medicine in the humble Smith and Wesson .22 Model 34 aka "Kit Gun" as those small pellets do penetrate well through a snake's skull they say.

Cheers guys. It's only close range I'm shooting tbh, within 10 yards, 15 at max around farm outhouses and sheds.

I have got a 9mm garden gun that I have tried but I thought the shotshells might be quieter 🤔🤷

I'll have a look at the CB long and zimmers though for sure!

Thanks Tim, I'd love to try just a few if you could spare some at all? Just to see to be honest.
I have some you are welcome to but I found them useless
I ended up using a 9mm garden gun even that you had to be close to the rats say within twenty feet but they wouldn’t penetrate the garden fence beyond that

Don't bother, I tried some many moons ago and they were useless unless you are within about 6 feet from a rat.

Try these instead if you can find them

They certainly do the trick up close.

38/357 shotshells out of a revolver are much more potent, but noisy.

The issue with 22LR shotshells is the rifling in your barrel.
The shot is flung to the 4 winds after it leaves the barrel.
I have shot rats very successfully with 22 shotshells through an ancient Winchester pump action that had no rifling left.
Even so, 20 feet was a very long shot.

Oh yes I see what you mean.
I'd like to try some of the CB Long or Zimmer Patrone type cartridges.
Enfieldspares mentioned, but it's getting hold of some without paying silly money to RFD them to my RFD!

Aguila .22LR Super Colibri 20g work beautifully through my Miroku 22LR.
Expensive, but then I don't plink with them; they are for cleaning up ferals in my back garden (Rats and Rainbow Lorikeets).

Slightly off topic but years ago rifled slug barrels on shotguns were used for close range shooting ie woodcock jumping in cover. The rifling caused a wide dispersant of the shot, reducing carcass damage. Haven't heard of anyone here doing it for years, presumably the laws governing rifled slugs/barrels contributing to their decline.

I have found shot shells to be more or less useless. In the dim and distant past I have used 38 Special shot shells from a 4 inch Smith and Wesson relvolver. Unless you were very very close to the target it would have been better to throw the gun at it.
