.243 rifle

Hi people I'm looking for your opinion on which .243 rifle yous would recommend and also whether to use a soft point or ballistic tip.

Rifle - Sako 85 without a doubt.

Ammo - H&L shots are about penetration and creating a large wound channel, so for this reason I use soft points for deer. Soft point 100gn also do the job on fox, but so will any .243 round! Ballistic tips release their energy v quickly as they shatter so are less likely to go all the way through, great for head and neck shots I'm sure but couldn't tell you how they perform on chest shot deer.

if you're shooting fox, roe, and the odd larger species at sensible distances you won't go far wrong with a 75 or 80gn soft point. I use 100gn cos my gun likes it! Am working on a load for 80gn though.

A good 80gr bullet ive been using in my 85, is the nosler bt With H 4350 or same powder but the 87gr Vmax both work really well and accurate.

It would be reloads I would probably be using.
Sierra 80gn blitz, under 45gns of win760/h414 (obviously start 10% lower and work up) superbly accurate in my .243 very good deer bullet in my opinion without excessive meat damage, drops charlie on the spot, like turning a light switch off, give them a try mate you will not be dissapointed.

I would'nt go picking bullets till you have a rifle certain makes like certain bullets but i would go for soft points for deer and bt's for vermin

have had some good results with sierra pro hunter in my R93

Anything from Tikka/sako...Just a pleasure to shoot and so user friendly! Can find older tikka 595's for very reasonable money and many would say they were built better than the present Tikkas...and dont stint on the glass either, buy the best you can!! I would highly recommend a Zeiss Duralyt, either 2-8x42 or the 3-12x50 model! as for bullets, once you have a rifle, you need to get out and send as many varieties downrange as you can! whatever shoots sub-moa will be a good starting point!
All the best, Tris
