After forgetting i had removed the scope and then refitted it into rings months back i took the .270 out and had this particularly unimpressive result!! first shot was above the back, no worries i thought its needing adjusted --so adjusted scope to fix and had the next 3 tidy shots but then ooooh dear, out at 100 yards ,well, see piccy.:rolleyes:I have the 8x56 schmitt bender on so pinpoint at 100 is not expected but holy lederhosen batman this was baaad.I conclude i have contracted flinchitus .Either that or my scope is naff. Anyways i posted so those of us that are honest enough to admit we are not demigods know it alls can have a laugh at my expense and perhaps realise.when they browse for advice on bad groupings its not just them that fluffs it . p.s unmoderated monarch and the noisiest bugger on planet earth

I’m not at all laughing nor being critical when I say that given a normally shaped rifle stock there’s no need for anyone to flinch (or even be aware of recoil) from a .270 nor cartridges much larger for that matter - BUT - flinches happen, they can appear from nowhere, they are insidious.

I’ve seen people who were otherwise ‘flinch-free’ develop one when shooting a shotgun at a pattern plate. It’s generally gone when returning to shooting at a flying target.
This scenario is similar to your zeroing experience perhaps.

The well tried way of testing for a flinch is to have a dummy round randomly loaded along with a few live ones. If you’ve not got a friend to help you could load a magazine yourself without looking at the rounds. It’s not a cure but it normally shows what’s happening.

If you are having ‘issues’ then perhaps getting back in the groove with a .22LR or an air rifle may work.

Of course you’ll also be checking your scope mounts etc. I hope?

Thanks for showing your target - it’s at least an honest one.

Have you got a mod on it?

She can be a bit feral without one! I shot one for 10 years and she had a 8x56 Schmidt on top, zeroed 1”high at 100m she was a faithful fluff buster out to 300 plus

No point in trying to keep a rifle "original" on aesthetic or handling/balance grounds if it makes you develop a flinch. It's obviously not pleasant to shoot. Sell it on and get yourself a plastic fantastic and moderate with a huge can !

No mod as i do love the handling as it is --but it may come to that and i may get it threaded== as you need total faith in your tools in this game

Out of interest--on the 270 rifles in particular what sort of recoil/ sound reduction is possible as i find at this point in time when i let go a shot here in Scotland the windows rattle in Kent.My .243 noise reduction is pretty impressive.

What noise? What recoil?

😆😆
Took my lad out today . he'd never heard this rifle bark---he ended up standing 50 feet away:lol:--ive resisted the moderator idea but if this rifles going to be trusted to deliver my gut tells me it needs less recoil and less big badda booom.Disappointing as i wanted it left as is but whats the use if i cannot get groups im happy with at the 100.

Get it done, you’ll then shoot it with confidence until the barrel is dead

Well Anser anser, Not a lot of sympathy here is there ? If you were firing without a lot of clothing/padding that can make a big difference to felt recoil. When I am using my 30-06 I make sure I am wearing my quilted body warmer. If its summer and T shirt weather I use an old towel on my shoulder. Can I suggest that a moderator will make a significant difference. Hope this is helpful.

Do you reload? If so, you could download it. I do this with mine. It shoots a 130 softpoint at around 2750. It's still barky, but it's more than manageable. Having said that, with a moderator it tamed even factory loads to pussycat levels

I reckon a mod is needed overall-- recoil is harsh by anyones standards and although it has "character" its so damned loud i feel like posting "sorry" cards through all the cottages within 3 miles
