270 lead free ammo advice.

Morning all,

I have been using Winchester extreme point copper in 270, I'm happy with the killing power and accuracy inside 200, but beyond that I'm not finding them kill well. I've used about 300 of them now so I'm fairly sure they aren't the ones for me.

What's everyone finding in 270 non lead that's doing the job well out to 500m? Need a factory load and non toxic.

Cheers

I’ve not tried them at 500M but Sako 130Gr Powerheads with the Barney’s TSX are doing the business for me.

You'll want something that stays above 2,000 fps at that distance for optimum performance.

Not common at all to find factory ammo that can achieve this.

Only brand that lists data out to 500 yards is Hornady:

Their Superformance 270 130g CX achieves this

But their Outfitter 270 130g CX does not

The stuff ain't cheap either...

If you are running an FLS contract, I'd say look at 7mm Rem Mag instead, as that has fast become the common choice.

Bit too early to be buying a 7PRC but if/when factory ammo becomes more common, I'd be looking at that as well.

Prc is on the list, fighting the temptation to buy a 6.5prc 🤣 I'd rather stick with the 270 as I've shot it for years but agree a caliber change may be called for

I’ve seen several people using the Hornady CX. It’s very effective. The damage to the front end of roe deer is indistinguishable from conventional lead bullets, and they don’t go anywhere.

If I'm going to go down the PRC rabbit hole I'd rather wait for the 7 to come out in some more accessible rifles, not really interested in fully building a rifle. A decent factory rifle in 7prc will be next for me, il keep the 270 just wanting something to shoot through the 270 with a bit more killing power at range.

125 grain .270 Win Peregrine Factory Ammo from @Edinburgh Rifles might be worth a look.

Looking at a roughly set up ballistic calculator for them with the box MV and G7 BC you should still be at 2151 FPS at 500m so even with these being a rough estimate should be over 2000 FPS.

Peregrine Monolithic Factory Ammo launch

Never used the Peregrine's myself, but Ed has always been very helpful when I've spoken to him and I'm sure would be able to help.

Need to change the way you shoot deer.

Copper needs a higher velocity to expand reliably when compared to lead so shoot at sensible distances to allow for that. Max effective range might be 400 with lead but might have to be 300 with copper due to velocity requirements

I would disagree but ok

What do you disagree about?

Its well known people who dislike copper for lack of killing power are probably shooting it at ranges that they would shoot lead at. your ELD-X will expand relaibly down to 1800fps, as mentioned in this thread, copper is more around 2000fps. You do the math, need to shorten your effective range to have an impact velocity that allows for reliable expansion.

Same goes for lead shot vs steel, you need to up the shot size and drop the range. Average killing range on waterfowl could be 40 yards with lead. But you might need to reign that in when using steel

I know you want a factory load but if you could home load yew tree tlr in 270cal will do the business to that range no bother
