Hello, Novice here. All advice welcome

Excellent point @Tim.243 . Could pick up a cheapo tall fridge for a couple of hundred but would I need to put a frame inside to take the weight? Could anyone share a pic of their fridge units to give me an idea of what mods I need to make? Thanks for the advice
You could pick up an old drinks fridge for nothing. That's how most people get started.

Thanks, I’m strongly leaning in that direction. I’ve only shot a .308 in terms of big (ish) boy guns, which was no issue at all, but was wondering about the recoil of .270… have read that it can make people twitch a bit, particularly without a mod (am well aware of the multitude of variables relating to recoil, so difficult to opine blah blah). I’d request a mod for whatever calibre I go for anyway, so assuming the kick would be akin to the 308??
What kick?

With you fully focused on your deer you won't notice any recoil as your knees knocking heart thumping dry mouth (and that is just getting out the truck) lol

£5 for a tall fridge off marketplace and put a bar in at the top, buy a swivel hook from Tim and you are away. If you have space for it.

if it’s a warm night would you have to process them that night?
If you shot them at night you could process them in the morning, if hung in a garage etc. for own consumption. A lot of the fallow season when you are taking multiples, it’ll be below 7 deg at night. I leave the carcasses out of the fridge to cool anyway often overnight until they go in the fridge.

Really kind of you, am not often that way tbh but really appreciate the offer. Completely forgot about sticks 🫤
They are about a tenner to make if you look up monkey spanker sticks on here (think I have that right!) if you are on foot in the lowlands you’ll need sticks, they don’t need to be fancy. Search B&Q sticks on this forum.

Yeah, doing the DSC1 we had to shoot off quad sticks and they made an incredibly stable platform. They had the viper sticks which were great but don’t fancy dropping 300 quid on sticks just yet, so I’ll definitely have a look at the monkey spanker sticks (awesome name… guess stalking is quite a solitary pastime 🤭)

Viper sticks are for later in your shooting career along with the 1/4" MOA rifle

The more expensive crap you buy the more you want...I'm in that camp at the mo...and trying hard to behave.

Its nice to have fancy stuff and I have a 1/4" MOA rifle ...that weights to much. Its a pleasure to shoot and set up for me and will produce cloverleaf groups at 300 yards....so what :) You dont need that level of accuracy to kill a deer and until you are really confident, and have practiced loads, you should limit the range to ensure you kill everything that you shoot at on the spot.

Most importantly ...get what you want and sod everyone else opinions...but dont get a .270

Hi all, I’ve been shooting and fishing for as long as I can remember. That said, all of my shooting to date has been either birds or rabbits and limited to shotguns, 22LR, and air rifles. I have recently become infatuated with deer stalking but am relatively inexperienced, so go easy on me. I recently did my DSC1 (waiting for the result) and am going through the application process to get my first FAC. I live in the south east (UK), where there are huge fallow herds, and many many muntjac, so I’m hoping to get involved in helping to manage those numbers (although permissions are as rare as hens teeth where I live, despite the number of deer). I’m hoping to get some advice from this community on a number of issues - first one being best calibre. I’m torn between .270 and (don’t beat me up) a 6.5 CM. I want something that’ll manage non lead well as the writing is apparently on the wall for lead, so I don’t want to start using it and then have to morn its passing… rather just never know what I’d be missing and kick off with non lead. Anyway, am sure no one will read this ‘short’ introduction but glad to be inducted in the SD.
Welcome where about are you, the huge herds of fallow sounds like my neck of the woods, Nr J28 M25

but truely above all don't listen to people who say get a 270 , they have never tried anything else
Ah, but I have!
Only a limited selection I grant you (8 - 10 different calibres at one time or another), but I don't ever comment on calibres I haven't tried.

What is the advantage, if any, of a thumb hole stock? I know this isn’t a beauty contest (having already mentioned aesthetics once) but I like the look, it’s just whether there are any tangible benefits, or disadvantages of this style. It comes at a premium and want to spend as much as I can on the scope.
You get the recoil straight back with a thumbhole stock its easyer to find the target again after the first shot, better angle for your hand. A thumbhole stock on a rifle you need to cock the firing fin as 505 will make you slower needing to move your hand to find and use it. With a traditional stock with a normal safety you can push the safety while you are on the way to shoulder the rifle much more natural and faster.

And above all, don't listen to the people who say don't get a .270
They've never used one.
And never listen to people who live in caves and drink from puddles 😅 😅

On a slightly more serious note I had a Sako 85 in .270 ...the deer didnt notice the difference :) nor do they notice the difference between the .243 and 6.5 Creed 👍

Whatever you get will always be thinking about different rifles, is there something better etc etc 👍
