.270 or 6.5 x 55

If your going to be a pleasure stalker get a 6.5x55 lovely calibre.

If your going to be a killer buy a 270, she is the queen of calibres, she will shoot what ever you feed it accurately with little fuss

I would shoot anything in the world up to dangerous game with mg rust bucket ruger 270 and 130gn barnes bullet

I'd ask first which deer, what range and whether you reload?
I had a 6.5x55 with a 20" barrel before I was a reloader, and I found even for (recreational) hill hinds the factory offerings were disappointing in terms of trajectory (even the hotter ones) - so I got a .270 instead.

In retrospect I should just have got the .270. As a reloader I could have made the 6.5x55 do better - but it's probably easier to get the .270 to do less, if that's what's wanted.

Thanks for the reply, I’m not currently reloading. Deer wise predominately Fallow/Roe/Muntjac.

Cheers!

I use 6.5x55 for sika (Sako 120gr. copper bullets), and have always had great results in the range I shoot out to, about 150-200 yards. It's very effective, but recoil is minimal, ie a perfect combination in my book. I've never used .270, but some people say the recoil can be brutal.

If you're not planning on shooting out past 200 yards, I'd go with 6.5x55 or one of the other 6.5 cals. Others will no doubt disagree.

The only downside of the 270 is it’s not always possible to see shot reaction due to recoil. Personally I like the 6.5x55 for mixed stalking with home loads. If I was an open hill only guy I’d get the 270 (actually a 6.5prc probably)

Don't be fooled by reports of too much recoil like any calibre it's all to do with the stock shape
if it's strait you will be fine, you can load down a .270 to 6.5 levels but you can not load a 6.5 up.
As for recoil a light 12 has more.

If you shoot larger deer most of the time I would suggest .270 and especially if you dont reload and need to rely on factory fodder. If on the other hand you mainly shoot smaller deer and have the capacity to reload then you can get .270 performance out of a Swede. Saying that you could probably get even better performance out of a .270 if you apply similar techniques.

I love both calibers and the last deer I took was with a .270.
The 6.5x55 is a light recoil the .270 a bit harder.
The .270 harder hitting.
Frankly as long as the rifle has a good moderator on it I'd go with the .270.

With lightish bullets (around 120gr) the .270 is mild recoiling and accurate in my experience and the large case capacity gives a lot of flexibility in loads. My favourite though is the 7x57 which is a do it all cartridge and uses a bit less powder than the .270.
