What way did they preformI used 140 grain soft point interlocks - ( Hornady 2735 )
I’ve had people tell me to go heavier on .270 for lighter deer for less damage? Even 150 has been banded about, is that not your experience? I’ve kinda fell into the ‘130 for everything’ rutI did well with mine using 140gn SST's and H4831sc. A bit harsh on lighter deer though.
I actually download my .270 to around 2800fps and see minimal carcass damage on roe with the 130's. It also lets me take reds out to sensible ranges tooI’ve had people tell me to go heavier on .270 for lighter deer for less damage? Even 150 has been banded about, is that not your experience? I haven’t opened the reloading can of worms yet!I actually download my .270 to around 2800fps and see minimal carcass damage on roe with the 130's. It also lets me take reds out to sensible ranges too
You will find a 130gr Pro-hunter at 2'800 fps is good out to 300 yardsI haven’t opened the reloading can of worms yet!
Hi Tam,Thanks for replying what way do they preform![]()
Thanks very much Herne for sharing your thoughts and information much appreciatedTam,
Over the years and on all native species of deer in the UK on the hill, woodland and farmland I have tried:
Norma 130 grain SP’s
130grain Sierra Gamekings
130grain Hornady SST’s
140 grain Nosler partitions and BT’s
150 grain Gamekings and Nosler BT’s
156 grain Sako Hammerheads
I am working through Non-lead Barnes ttsx’s at the Moment, all the above performed admirably most of the time.
BT’s could be inconsistent in their expansion from “pencilling” to “explosive“ this tended to happen at shorter ranges commonly found in woodlands, 30-100m.
Gamekings performed well in all circumstances and were reasonably priced.
Partitions seemed to be a harder bullet very consistent, limited expansion and little meat damage but deer in my experience tended to run further, this could be a problem in woodland and I stopped using them for that reason.
Hammerheads excellent results but perhaps not a bullet for longer ranges.
My preferred load in woodland at ranges <100m is the 156 grain Hammerhead. Great knockdown power, I found the larger slower bullet throttled back a bit, don't unduly damage smaller deer.
On the hill something lighter and pointier, I found the 140 grain Noser BT’s worked really well as did the GK’s.
I haven’t used the ttsx’s in anger yet.

Cheers Michael any help much appreciatedTam.
130g Hornady Interlock for smaller stuff downloaded to about 2800fps.
130g Sierra GK/Nosler Accubond for reds.
Developing load for 150g Nosler Partitions for possible use overseas.
Just what I do hope it helps.
