.30-06 opinions

I shoot a tikka t3 in 30-06 with a Boyd stock, moderated and limbsaver airtec recoil pad, with a 123 grn Sako round hardly any felt recoil, this covers most deer, I move up to 150grn for anything bigger, I love it
How do those 123gr fair out? I normally shoot 150gr I was nearly buying a box of them last time I was in the gunshop. They guy behind the counter said they're flying out the door. I heard they can be a bit explosive if you hit bone on the way in

I'm using 120gn Barnes out of my 30-06 @ 3400fps it has killed well in excess of 300 animals this year alone, recoil is minimum as the rifle is quite hefty with the DS on top and a T8. Range is limited to around 450yds as velocity bleeds off quite quickly. If you wanted to slow it down to 3000fps with the same bullet the it would be a pussycat as regards to recoil.
Why anyone would want to shoot heavier bullets is beyond me, 120gn in 30 cal has sufficient energy and very manageable recoil, nothing in this country needs anymore..

Had a .308 for years, bought a .30-06 last year. Very pleased, recoil isn’t really that much more, extremely accurate, nothing has complained yet!
Using factory sako super hammer head ammo, 1/4” groups at 120 yards.

Hi all

As title suggests I’m looking for peoples FIRST HAND opinion of the legendary .30-06 I have done months of research into this Calibre so I’m quite familiar with its capabilities and ballistics/performance. It will primarily be used for reds in Scotland but also all U.K. deer species with the odd bore (hopefully) in there too. What I’m more wanting to specifically know is just how “bad” is the recoil of the .30-06 ?? To be even more specific...how harsh is it in the form of a sako85 classic with a moderator ??

With this being a fairly light rifle and overall light stalking set up I’m guessing the recoil will be toward the upper end of what the .30-06 can be...(given ammo choice and so on, let’s go with factory loads) I currently have a .25-06 as my go to deer rifle which is more than manageable and recently dropped me a lovely stag at just shy of 200 yards with a .117gr gamhead no problem 👍🏻

The .30-06 to me is the practical and logical upgrade...I just don’t know any one with one to use before committing to it...after hearing so many mixed reviews I’m hoping there’s a few people on here that will be using one regularly that can tell me exactly how it feels/performs.

Many thanks, Benny
For U.K. us just get a 270 win better use of the same case as 30-06

I suppose the other issue in the 308 v 30-06 debate is not the real facts but the perception of them. I have a 30-06 and I very much doubt if I would notice any difference between that and a 308 with the same twist rate, however I know of two estates that discourage the use of 308s, as they are apparently not flat enough for hill deer and when I was looking to book to go to Africa, one place only allowed 30-06, as they felt a 308 was not powerful enough.

I realise that none of this is actually true, however, it does matter if you are booking stalking.

Another consideration is that a good friend of mine is having difficulties on his renewal, as he has a 30-06, which his constabulary now consider too powerful for UK use.
What constabulary is that? Hope its not Hampshire!

does 150-200 fps really make that much difference? You're bang on, all about perception....

I'd be asking them who the wet weekend in the office is, and I'd want to know their extension number so I could have a little chat! .30-06 too big - what a joke. They granted it - if nothing has changed and they now won't allow it then I'd be offering them the opportunity to buy me a new rifle.

that's surely got to be an early 1st April joke...or, more likely, they don't really trust the guy entirely so come up with excuses,,because as we all know (sense the sarcasm), someone going on a rampage with a 30-06 is far more dangerous than the same with a .243.. LOL ;)

I've got a 30-06 and 308. Either eyether mate. 150g in the 308 or 30-06 for any species here in NZ from Tahr to Wapiti. 30-06 does punch the shoulder a little more.
