Great Day on the Range

Had a great day on Saturday shooting my newest acquisition - 1943 M1 Carbine made by Inland Mfg. It is so light, very handy and a joy to shoot. Obviously, it is a straight pull and I can only imagine how good they would be in semi-auto. We were shooting at 300 yards, Bisley targets and I was generally on the board but was chuffed to finish with two shots in the bull.

I thought my fellow club members were more knowledgeable. The amount of times I had the following conversation:

What calibre is that?

30 carbine

So it's 30-30 then.

No. it's 30 carbine, a lot smaller than 30-30

So it's 30 cal like the 1919 Browning MG was

No, that was 30-06, they just shortened it to 30 cal

Mmmm. So, what is it???

M1s are nice little carbines. A friend in Zim had one. He grew up on a farm in what was then Rhodesia. He used that little carbine as an eight, nine and ten year old when the farm got shot up by the terrs. His Pa on the front stoop with a Bren Gun, his mother on one side of the house with an FN, him on other side with the M1, and sisters loading magazines and a shotgun if it all went horribly wrong.

The house was a typical old Rhodesian farmhouse with veranda all the way around. There extra security bars - mainly to stop incoming RPGs, the garden had been cleared and surrounded by a big fence at about 50 yards and then all the bush and scrub for another 50.

And they to hold off several attacks until the security forces arrived by truck, helicopter an old dakota dropping paratroopers.

I spent a lot of time working on that farm in my late teens and early 20s. 500 people living and working on it, about 1,000 acres of irrigated wheat, maize and tobacco plus 2,000 acres of grazing with a breeding herd of 500 beef cattle - mostly Brangus, all worked with horses. They lost the lot to Mugabe’s goons in the late 90’s. Its all now completely derelict with a few squatters scratching a living. All the farms have washed away, along with most of the good soils.

I had a good sunday with my 38spl S&W and my 9mm CZ.
Some guys in my club has begunn shooting IPCS with 9mm carbines and ar15 5,56 semiauto.

Yep. Just something about older guns that warms the cockles of this oul fella’s heart. Range days for me are 5-10 shots from the .308 and/or 6.5x55se then stuff them back in their bags and bring on the 8mm Mauser and the Mosin sisters - lubblyjubbly though this much fun can nowadays be pricey - but who cares? I do wish my eyes could still cope with the battle sights but scout mounts are a great fallback.
Just thinking about these ladies I get light-headed…..

Ponteland is a total pain at the moment, all of last month was cancelled due to admin errors, B range is still closed, A range is 300 yard max

Sighted in two rifles last Saturday at a range near Freiburg and came away with this lot from the brass scrap barrel. Happy de-priming time ahead.


These are all .308.

Yes, but it is difficult getting a booking at Ponteland that doesn't then get cancelled by the military. Which is a great shame as it's 12 minutes from my house!!

We had a shoot on 11 April that went ahead but our next one on 25 May has been cancelled. Apparently, Landmarc has had a lot of staff changes. We keep hearing rumors that B range will soon be ready to re-open. Mind it should be, after being closed for 6 years??
