.30-06 thoughts

I want to add another thing about the 30-06, I believe and it may just be me however I reckon the recoil from a 270 and 308 are snappier than the 30-06, maybe but that's just my thought when same bullet weights are used but I know friends who have also this thought.
Completely agree john, my 06 is a “BA-DOOM” type slow recoil vs even 243 which is a “Crack”....like a push rather than a whack!

regards,
Gixer

There are some places that I find anything more “boomy” than a .243 can bean issue in terms of upsetting the neighbours but also for some people (but not all)they may need to consider if the ground they shoot over is cleared for a 30 cal ?

30-06 is one of those old calibres where they got it right right bsk in 1906. It is good for just about any hunting situation you find yourself in around the world. Lighter bullets at full throttle loads you have a flat shooting mountain rifle, a very versatile all rounder with 150 to 165gn bullets and 180 to 220 gr bullets you can handle really big game.

Only slight downside is that it has enough recoil that it necessitates good rifle fit and technique - but those are pre requisites of any shooting.

If he already has a 222, 30-06 would be perfect partner. And you can find ammo everywhere around the world.

The other calibres in the same vein are the 7x57 and 7x64 - the later is very popular on the continent as military calibres where prohibited post WW2 for a number of years. Does everything the 30-06 does but with a little less recoil. But ammo can be hard to find.
Never had a problem with 7 x 64 ammunition

He is more a synthetic type. Very nice. Can’t help but think I’m now missing out after reading the replies.

I shoot both a 308 and 30/06 nothing really in for GB stalking but 308 ammo generally has more choice in shops the rest of the world the 06 seems to have the better option.

Bottom line they all do the job buy what makes you smile.

Thanks for the reply's guys. I believe he has read the posts but I haven't spoken to him yet.. Funny, I offered him to try my 6.5x55 and .308 to see what he thought of them. I now can't wait to try his .30-06 when he gets one.

Great thread. Reminds me why I have a 30-06.

I use mine for Scotland red deer stalking. It is an original 10-12 yr old Tikka T3 Hunter which is a light rifle for the calibre. I can carry, drag and crawl all over the hill with it. I wouldn’t dream of using it without a moderator. I have a small ASE SL-5 can on the end topped off with some quality glass.

I am based in Perthshire and use 125g Federal soft points. They were recommended and have never failed me in a variety of situations. They shoot pretty consistently.

About 3 or 4 yrs ago there was shortage of ammo and I moved to Federal 150g for a year (couple of clicks up on the scope). I have never explored heavier rounds or anything exotic and I don’t home load. I just works.

I am looking forward to identifying even lighter factory round that work for non-lead bullets.

The ballistic results are well beyond me but for years I have always wondered how it would perform with a “hot” homeload round with a 110g or 115g bullet head. Big Bang, light bullet = “flat” out to 200 / 225m??? Perhaps like a well tuned 25-06?.

I guess the copper situation will get me there within the confines of factory ammo.
