Took the afternoon to check more small game load developments. Basically creeping up slowly in charge weights of Alliant Herco looking out for any looming pressure spikes.
Had some fun with squirrels especially this big fat male that came looking for a fight!

The shot of the day was a 76 paces shot at a crow. Got it straight across the pinions, a perfect shot.

A few test loads were shot also.
I'm trying to regulate the small game load to the rear sights maximum height setting. It's still shooting low so I will try a pinch more Herco but today I shot low on the first at around 50yds then the wind blew me left for the second shot but the last two were on the money. It's getting there as I didn't need to elevate the front above the rear as much as before so hopefully the next test will give me what I want.IMG_20221113_152938.webp
A pleasant afternoon.
Fallow stalking tomorrow morning.

Very good indeed. What bullet are you using and roughly what velocity please.

Good question 😃.
So many kind folk on SD sent me their unwanted 308" bullets I'm using all sorts.

I forget who sent them but the new test load is a 145gn spire point I can load the right way and get th to cycle in the action although I only have one in the magazine at a time.
I'm just off super sonic at 7.4gns of Herco.
( I tested 7.4 guns today and don't really want to push it. The primers were flatter but still not super sonic so I feel a spike might be close by!).
Once these 145gn bullets are gone I will be using 110gn half jackets from Speer. I'm expecting them to go super sonic.

Today I didn't see any deer. I was out from dawn until midday. I did find a hot trail that my dog was very keen on so I had just missed an encounter.
At midday I switched to small game mode again and took a 12yd rabbit.

And at 60yds a nice neck shot pheasant.

This sounds perfect. I have a 44 magnum under lever that I would love to use for small game. And I keep coming back to the idea of a deer legal underlever. But then the 303 with open sights is calling me to go stalking with that too.

44mag gets legal no problem. No?

Hodgdon H110 gives English roe / fallow etc me with 44 mag

(Think N110 does too)

Thank you. I have n110 on the look out for lead free bullets now then. The trouble I find is all the load data seems to be 44mag pistol loads.

Hodgdon produces rifle data, as do some of the Speer reloading manuals.

Barnes has 44 mag data but the velocities are from an 8” test barrel.

I have some 180gr Peregrine Hog which I have loaded with N105. Should be over 1,700 ftlbs.

I can run GRT for you if you would like.

Scrummy
