300 PRC. Thoughts?

I'm considering a 300 PRC as an ELR target option. I'm wondering what experience people have had with regards to ammunition availability, and if anyone has had one and replaced with something else, what did you go for and why? Can't consider a .338 as I shoot at Bisley frequently. Cheers 🙂

There are better out there that will reach out for a bit cheaper than the 300 PRC like 300 wm etc ! but now I have found all the faults with mine Iam happy with it as for Bisley its over the top for there max range as the 6.5 creed has it all covered ! and you don't need to **** ammo at 25ydrs every time you wish to shoot ?.
The Hme can't be used at Chobb/ ridge feild range ! so thats out and your just left paper bashing at a cost .
Mine likes Factory 225 eldm @ £64 x20 rds  it also likes home loaded 225eldm a tad cheaper but far more cost than say the 6.5 creed used to cost to shoot at a 1000.
Go to Wales /other and thats when the 300prc comes into its own after 13-1400 yrds You can see what they can do they do bark a bit but there not as bad as say the 338/.50 I used to own.
If your not going to venture past Bisley I wouldn't go down the 300 PRC road

Thanks for the reply. I'll definitely be shooting places other than Bisley. I've got a range relatively close (about 2.5 hours closer than Bisley!) that goes out to 1 mile. I know you can't use it on Chobham, but I don't want a calibre I can't shoot anywhere at Bisley as I'm there quite frequently.

Then Fill your boots feller mine is the B14 wilderness but its now in a KRG X-Ray stock with a few add on's . Find the brass and dies while your waiting to get it but expect around £140 ish for lapua or ADG and mag primers .
enjoy the ride mty,
Or 7 PRC ?

Or 300 Norma for ELR ?

That’s the rabbit hole I was disappearing down before I had a word with myself
Looked into it very briefly. Slightly shorter barrel life, not sure what gains tbh. I know there are barreled actions available in 300 PRC to drop into a chassis I know I like. Don't have a clue on the Norma 😂

I'd be putting a barreled action in an XLR Envy Pro chassis, the same as my 6.5CM. I don't reload yet, so it'll be factory ammunition for a bit!

Time to sell the dog lol. mine didt like the lighter hornady eld x spat them 2-3" .
I have a 1-9 26" but when that gets washed out I will a 30 " . The 230 gr A tip were ok but decided to stay 225 eldm until I run out of a bulk buy and still have 1300 of the buggers then I wish to try Berger 220 or Sierra

Reloading is my next priority, but I'm waiting on doing a course.

One thing I would say is around shell holders with any of my standard presses all have had stuck cases while being correctly Covered in lube ! The only press that i have not is the Forster Co-ax as it holds the head centred every time . So it maybe worth keeping an eye out for one?
Courses are ok but a better way is to find a reloader nr you buy your dies and learn slowly at your own speed .
Good luck pity your so far away as i'd be happy to let you use mine as I do with other lads that use my gear and Chrono to get the best out of there loading.
Its always worth a shout out on here to get some help getting started.

Really appreciate that mate. I've asked Josh at C2 Precision if he'll show me the ropes. Hoping to get started soon 🙂

Ive got a Dolphin made 300PRC and have no complaints. I hand load all my ammo and have had no problem getting hold of Lapau cases. I also completely agree with Paul o' and use a Forster press. I'll also give a shout out the RCBS match master dies, the seating press has a slot cut in the body of the die which makes seating long bullets a breeze, In my case 230g Berger hybrid OTM's

Recoil is not a problem for me, and I've shot it to just under a mile in Wales. Im at Bisley most weeks if you want a look/go.

Plenty of components and Ammo available
The Hornady Match Ammo in 225 form is excellent, certainly in the Bergaras I have seen it put through

PRC is posting decent results in lots of ELR competitions around the world

If building rather than buying 1:8” is the better option
If barrel life is a concern get a Creedmoor
The PRC has around 10% greater case capacity, couple that with the much longer throat and seating position of the bullet and your usable case capacity is more like 20%

The 300Norma is more…in every way…but then I am on my second so I would say that

What did you do with the first Ed?
Built on a Sako TRG42 (which was originally a .338lap mag) using a rechambered well used 26” 1:10” .308 barrel to prove a point.

Ran it for a couple of years.
Bonkers gun.
Shot 1/2moa out to 1000m throughout even when barrel looked like this:

Great gun
Should never have sold it
But I was made an offer I couldn’t refuse in its original form as a 338

Built another one on a Sako TRG-S in a 24” 1:8” sporter barrelled stalker/long range plinker more suited to my requirements.
Butchered the horrible factory stock and carbon wrapped it

Use it a lot
Probably seen 6-700 rounds so far
See no sign of barrel obvious wear other than my misuse of a steel cleaning rod without a bore guide!
