300 PRC vs 300 Win Mag

Not for any particular reason other than a bit of fun, I’ve ended up with a .300WM barrel & action and wondered if biggererer is betterer and build a 300 PRC as well then go play…

FYI - I am an RFD so it’s less of an issue in real terms.

I’ve recently got an MDT account so the stocks are my choice - the 300 WM is on a Rem700 and I’m thinking the same for the 300PRC

This isn’t about selling my tat, or offering to build stuff, more a ‘Coorrr… yeah, do that!’ Sort of post…

Discuss.

Must admit never had an issue with WM brass - running RP on 7 or 8 loadings currently. It’s a great cartridge but I’m sure the others are just as good if not better. Mine will send 208 A-max’s out to 1600 yards and kill deer with 148 copper - the barrel is now looking terrible but it still shoots.

I was thinking that.. wouldn’t you just re-size the neck rather than a full-length resize which shortens brass life?

If you’re not running too hot then a Lee Collet Die works well. However I usually combine with a couple of thou bump with a Redding Body Die after annealing each firing.

This is just an excuse to buy more stuff, isn’t it? I’ve not reloaded collared so obviously will need lots more stuff to clutter up my workspace…

300wm is very capable
The barrel length is fairly critical, mine was too short to get real velocity to shoot beyond 1000m with any accuracy (Although that may have been me!)

We have a range member running a 28" AI and it is every bit as capable as the 300 PRCs rattling the 18" mile target with ease (Still not a Norma Mag though....)

As above the only ball ache is running belted cases
DO NOT FL size without testing shoulder bump in chamber to a minimum
You will eat your cases with head separation

Some insomnia remedy below

body dies are also a good thing to have

Cheers, I'll have a read.
The barrel I have here is 24-inch which is probably 2-inches too short (Said the actress to the bishop)

The nice thing about these dies is they are relatively inexpensive - just add a seater die. For the money they make very straight and consistent ammo. Annealing however will require some investment unless you use the drill and socket method.

I’m currently on the drill & socket and the volume I’ll run may not justify the amount of investment.

The Lee dies have always worked well, just work within their means, but I’m slowly moving a few over to Redding and my next gift to self will be the Frankfort Arsenal uni seating set.

Interesting reading. I anneal, full length resize and use a Larry Willets collet die to resize any bulging near belt. Have had 10+ reloadings out of SAKO and GECO cases in the past.
Albeit not a ‘hot’ load.

I have a 300 win mag that is used only for steel .
Back in gunsmithing school in the last century, i was shown 100-shot, 300 yard groups from a machine rest that were 1" ctc. The Army match team ignored the belt when chambering their single shot Model 70's....just headspaced off the shoulder. Handloads with air gaged and weighed components, but never reloads. -Muir

You sound a lot like me in your method of choosing a cartridge! I'd shoot the Win Mag for a bit then rebarrel into something really quirky that will probably make you wish you'd just stuck with what you had. For me it's the experience of getting to know as many variations as I can - pun intended!
