.300 Win Mag vs. .300 WSM

WSM only really gets close to the WM if you home load but you'll never get right up there with velocity/power. You'll get very close and use a fair bit less powder as it's very efficient and if saving weight is necessary you can use a short action and save a fraction but more importantly the WSM is just a much more sexy looking case. There is a hardly used Browning for sale on here which if I had the money is snap it up.

1) No Belt (easier to reload for)
2) More efficient (lees powder for the equivalent velocity)
3) ability to load heavy and long bullets to a longer OAL to mag length (200gr+ in 300wm in a normal long action

I've hunted with a WSM for over 10 years now, great calibre. But to me the differences equate the following, If you are planning on shooting 180gr bullets and under then go for the WSM, if you want to shoot the heavy stuff above 180gr the go for the Win Mag and make use of the extra case capacity.
Personally I use 165gr soft points or 168gr TSX's so the WSM works well for me.

I thought you used the 300 win mag.I didn't realise you had a 300 wsm

Wouldnt even worry about that.
capable of launching even 200gr faster than a WM with less powder

That data is a bit selective...I've loaded 220g eld-X in my wm and can get over 2800fps out of it without running into any pressure issues....I'm not sure you'd have the capacity to do that with the wsm......that said although I've got n160 and 560 in the cupboard it wouldn't be my first choice with the WinMag.

My take is the Vit manual was written by the marketing department. The only manual I'd have no time for.

They are ALL written by the marketing department
Same goes for Hornady and Lee who don't openly publish barrel length.

Merely an indication of like for like bullets over 180gr still have an advantage in the WSM

Good numbers
what length barrel?
I think you would run out of steam at the very high end in bullet weight with the WSM
Although Nosler data shows its still viable at 220gr (although a 26" barrel will help)

300 Winchester Short Magnum (WSM) Load Data - Nosler

Don't get me wrong, I ran a WM for many years. but there is a reason I no longer do and many of them are listed

If you are doing the magnum thing, go the whole way and have a look at 300 RUM. Lots of recoil, lots of velocity even with 200g bullets and flat trajectory :)

Fair. In my WSM I'm getting 2870 fps with RS70 and 210gr ABLR from a 24" tube. That is top for my rifle.

Personally I'd either go .30-06 or look at an alternative to BOTH the two options. .308 Norma Magnum or one of the Dakota cartridges. Or even .300 Weatherby Magnum. If not then, yes, .300 Winchester Magnum as it is likely to be still about long after .300 WSM like the .225 Winchester has become moribund...or near enough no longer available without "aggro". Also if you ever sell I'd guess that .300 Win Mag will be easier to shift.

22" Barrel.....I won't include the data as the load would be pushing the envelope on an older gun, but was using rl22...under normal circumstances I use the 220 over 67grns giving a touch over 2600fps....but fancied seeing if I could get to 3500ftlbs at 100m....which need an mv of at least 2800fps.....
