.308 bullet for lowland Reds

Real world experiences with a .308 bullet for big bodied lowland reds. H/L shooting primarily with enough energy for consistent pass through and decent wound channel at usual UK stalking ranges.

Entering the deep dark rabbit hole of reloading, lead or copper considered.

Have some N140 here so any starting recipes also welcome (feel free to pm) 🫡 doing the ground work before the season begins (Still sticking with the traditional season on our ground)

20" barrel, 1:10 twist

Cheers,

Al

In .30 cal I have tried
125grn hornady gmx
150grn Barnes ttsx
165grn Barnes ttsx
165grn nosler partition
175grn Barnes LRX
220grn Sierra round nose.

Every single one killed deer fine, I’d say the best for knocking them over was the partition, the one I have stuck with is the Barnes 175grn.

I also have a mate using the 165grn hornady cx and the 170grn lapua naturalis both in .308 and both working really well.
Good luck!

If want pass through go 150 grain minimum bullet with lead. Load up N140 to usual recipes, follow book, but normally 44 to 46 grains works. Shot reds up north and big fallow down here in Hampshire. Tend to favour accubonds.

LRX or TSX of any 308 calibre will go through big reds no problem at all, as will any type of non-lead bullet that holds together.
