Has anyone got any reloading data for 308 subsonic using 220g nosler subsonic heads any idea of powders etc. Regards steve

Steve, you'll have more luck on the Nosler reloading forum than here. They're a good bunch and I've had some really good advice on specific Nosler bullets. They treat newbies nicely!

Nosler Reloading Forum

Here you'll get beaten around the ears for using the word "head", as several of the members are weird arse OCD pedants who can't sleep for weeks at the mere thought of head. Deep seated issues I think. (For a bit of fun, in your next post, pls refer to bullets using the terms "pill", "tip" and "projie" as well as "head"....)

I loaded some lighter bullets in .308 (can't remember the weight) using Trail Boss. They were fairly accurate, but dropped like a stone - the trajectory made a 45-70 look flat-shooting! I didn't pursue the idea...

All you've got to do is use a decent BDC reticle, measure the drops past your point of zero (50m typically), and work out which hashes correspond to the point of impact. It's really simple to work out and then you're away. Great fun and super effective on close range forest goats and small deer.

8.5gr of Unique works with 200gr sierras in 308.

The best powder was trialboss which you can’t get anymore.

I think that around 6gr Viht N310 will work but can't be sure so will do some digging online.

Found this:

Start high and work down to subsonic using a chronograph.

Vhit N32C Tin Star is a very similar powder but unfortunately light on data for rifle cartridges.

Allegedly (as found on the www):

"They have roughly the same burn ate.
They have roughly the same energy per volume.

So in short they are interchangeable.

They do not however have the same volume!
TinStar is @1/3 less fluffy and only occupies 2/3 the volume of TrailBoss grain for grain, so if not careful you can overload and get into pressure trouble."

Not sure how you would run into pressure problems in a CF rifle case with a powder designed for Cowboy Action shooting, even with a 30% overload?

I have read a document produced by Hodgdon on how to do reduced loads. Covers several calibres. Can't find it at the moment but with a bit of Googling ........

Cheers

I followed what is shown here (I think it was orginally linked by Dodgyknees) and they worked well enough for dropping munties in their tracks in woodlands.

Only just noticed the comments above.

Load data;
Hornady 220 grn 3090,
COL 2.8"
16.2 Grn of TB (chrunchy when seating the bullet).
Tipped the chrony at a consistent 1440 fps, not subsonic but very very quiet through the mod, and just over the 1000 ft/lbs I was searching for.

No hold off required out to the 60yds zero I needed them for, and they group reasonably at 100yds.

Trail Boss shouldn’t be compressed under any circumstances....apparently. That’s pretty much the only warning you get with it, as the volume of the powder means you should pretty much never be able to overcharge a case.

Tin Star, on the other hand, is not quite as fluffy and you could possibly cause yourself problems with a double charge.

Regards

Mark
