Tried to locate a thread that does this one but couldn't find it so here goes. My rifle shoots 1/2" with 150gr federal power shok lead ammo. Looking to move to non lead factory. What 308W are you guys using on Roe, Muntjac and CWD without major damage?
I do get damage when I hit high shoulder but it’s acceptable for the majority as they drop on the spot, Neat exit wound for blood trails and soup inside.
Barnes 130g TTSX has always worked brilliantly for me in .308. I have come to realise that acceptable damage is a very personal thing. Try one, see how you get on and if the damage is too great try a heavier, slower bullet.
I have found the Fox 130gr to be very good bullets.
For reasons largely of availability, I have now switched to 110gr Barnes TSX.
On muntjac and small roe, I have not noticed any material difference in damage, given that I shoot at the shoulder.
I was using the 130 Fox through a 20 inch Tikka to good effect. Did find that it needed peeling pretty quick as if left the blood meat/bruising seemed to be worse if hung for a few days Speed was up on that load so tried the 150s obviously running a bit slower, and didn't seem as bad.
Moved to 130 TTSX now through my Sauer 404 .308 barrel and seems better..... though tend to stick to the 6.5x55 barrel for anything Roe and below with the 100 gr TTSX.
Found the Fox projectiles and the TTSX both very forgiving in terms of load development and didn't need to do much at all to get them shooting fine to 200.... which is my self imposed limit.
