45-70 and copper

So what do you call Hornady’s 140gn solid copper Monoflex lever revolution Load in 30-30?

And it reaches the min 2450 fps and 1750 ft lbs for both Scottish and English requirements.
These have become very popular around here over the last few years . I have a few friends that use them and have heard nothing but positive comments on them , the same applies to the 250 grain 45/70 loads . I'll eventually try them out , but I have a lot of cup and core loaded ammo to go through first .

Good to hear. I have gone over to monolithics in all my hunting ammo. They just work well and minimal carcass damage. Yes I have had a couple of occasions where deer have a little longer to fall over and a 2nd shot has been taken. In these cases first shot has been a bit far back through the lungs. Operator error.

Relatively speaking, yes, the bullet looks long and thin but the large .458 (short) bullet is almost as long, agreed, twist does not need to be quite as fast, velocity is also a factor, high velocity need a faster twist.

45-70 is an odd cartridge with several “standards”. It’s important to load to the “standard” of the rifle, most are only rated to 27000psi older is 18000psi.

Some have 1/18 twist and some as much as 1/50. I had terrible trouble getting a Sharps replica to shoot and it turned out to be 1/50 (basically the same a rifled musket for round ball!). It shoots quite well with a 250gr hollow base bullet but would stabilise just about nothing else. Another with a 1/20 would not stabilise anything more than 405gr.

The above was supposed to be in response to Heym SR20’s post on twist.
