I think the 5.6x57's drop in popularity is closely linked to the increasing numbers of boar on the continent. The 5.6x57 was a popular roe round in Germany, but the increasing chance of seeing a boar in front of your highseat meant that boar legal calibres became standard. There was little point having a Roe only calibre that couldn't deal with boar. That seems to be why the .243 is not hugely popular in Germany either. Now there is only RWS 74 grain factory ammo available. I think Voere are one of the only manufacturers still producing factory made rifles in 5.6x57. This limited availability isn't conducive to promoting it's increased use. It still has some popularity in Austria, where I think it is still legal for Chamois.
