6.5 prc in a 20 inch barrell

Entirely normal. Witness all the 20” .270s out there.

They know everyone is obsessed with short barrels and often don’t check either the rifle or the ballistics.

They also know that for most people it makes no difference. A 6.5PRC shooting at 2800fps will be entirely effective in every possible UK stalking scenario, and you would never know that it’s performing nowhere near what it’s capable of, or that you’re making a much louder bang than you need to.

You could easily buy factory ammo, shoot it for the next 20 years and be entirely happy.

Unfortunately, you’re also now aware that you’ve could just as well have bought a Creedmoor or a .260Rem or a 6.5x55.

What you now have is an unnecessarily loud Creedmoor…

Or a short handy rifle that performs as a 26” creedmoor would. Might be a bit louder but the reality is a mod will tame most of the blast.

Like has been said get a decent stainless silencer. Ase Utra would be my choice. Which reminds me I need to change the silencer they came with my SAUM. Over barrel silencers keep the heat in if shooting strings.

If its not performing as well as I would like I ll go to a gunsmith and get a nice lightweight sporter at 22 to 26 inch barrel fitted . I ll certainly enjoy working up loads and finding out what it is capable of until I hit some signs of pressure .
Thanks again gents .consensus seems to be N560 / Rs70 and a lighter weight for calibre bullet ??
I ll try there and see where it takes me .

The 6.5 Sherman Short is based off a .532” case head. This is where you get the magnum from.

Much the same as the WSM and SAUM’s.

They are need a magnum bolt face.

And

What this person said
You didn’t say the Sherman Short…..

And

There is no Sherman Magnum (according to his website)

And

I did say the 6.5 Sherman, is a 30-06 necked down with a shortened neck which it is with a steeper shoulder.

But

I will admit I was wrong too 😂

If you’re doing that build a Sherman Short, you’ll burn even more powder for marginal gain.

In reality, unless you’re really reaching out there the PRC will be just fine it’s just got the brakes on a little, it’ll still kill deer.

Morning all I've just purchased a new bergara wilderness sierra in 6.5 prc . It has a 20 inch factory barrell . Has anyone any experience of 6.5 prc in a short barrell . Any pointers regarding suitable uk available powder primers etc would be appreciated. Regards Dave .
Check out the Hornady podcasts. Seth raves about his 20 inch 6.5PRC saying he can get as good or better velocities as a 6.5 Creedmoor with a 26” barrel.
Also Bergara barrels may well be a bit faster than Tikka for example which are know for being a bit slower so you won’t necessarily lose so much by comparison.
Be interesting to see a back to back test.

2 good podcasts here from the Hornady guys.
You can email them at podcast@hornady.com and ask their advice on powders etc for short barrels.
Rokslide.com has lots of discussion about load development and velocities achieved etc on their forum
