Morning All,

Is anyone on here using a 6.5x 47L with copper bullets?

I'm using copper bullets successfully in both 260 Rem and 6.5 Creedmoor as I'm sure many other folk are too. I don't know of any reason why a 6.5 x 47L would be any different.

I had a 6.5x47 that I sold last year but I used 129gr Barnes lrx and they worked like a dream on red, roe and sika, only sold it because I burnt the barrel out.

My only thought on it was it isn't the fastest of calibre, so my thinking was are people getting reliable expansion out to say 300 yards.
I'm using copper in a 308 currently and I'm a fan of copper just not a 308.

Thanks for the info, what sort of velocity were you using them at?

I've just started using 110grain virtus merlins out of the 260. Mv is around 3000fps and they are very accurate.
I've only shot two roe does on the last day of the season with them and both dropped on the spot. They performed as well as any lead bullet I've used and expanded very well, to the point where i may well slow them down a bit! Range was 180yrds for both.
Early day's but impressed so far👍

Oh no I have just purchased, like today, a 308 barrel to shoot copper. What dont you like, although its a bit late to ask.
Your thoughts are appreciated

308 is probably the most versatile cartridge especially for non toxic ammo. It’s the standard cartridge in use by Forestry (whatever the the commission is now called this week) and they use non toxic ammo - the Fox 130gn I think.

The 308 is not the most ballistically efficient in terms of BCs etc etc and the 6.5 lovers will start telling how the 6.5 beats it in terms of trajectory and energy at 500 plus metres etc. I am sure this does matter cos the extra energy is going to make so much difference on punching a hole through a piece of paper and its so much harder work dialling an extra few clicks.

But for deer use 308 is just a very good all round cartridge.

But the 308 does look a bit short and dumpy. The 7x57 and the 30-06 are nicely proportioned and look like proper cartridges. The 308 looks like it forgot to grow up.

Feeling a bit better now. You may well be correct, just as with girlfriends what look right is right, so I've made two sub-optimal choices !

I am using the Yewtree Super X in my 6.5x47, running @ 2950fps from 38gr of N540. I find the Super X excellent, especially on Fallow. Very happy with them out to 300m.

What’s your barrell length and twist on that please?

I’ve killed a two barrels worth of deer using 95 g GS custom in two 6.5/47 Lapua rifles

This class of bullet is ideal for the cartridge with LTS

Equivalents from other manufacturers are available

Vo is circa 3000 fps
What’s LTS please mate?

Hi, I'm just having a 6.5x47 built & have started thinking about what bullets to use.

Just wondering where you got to in your research? Did you start using copper & how have you got on?
