Hi all, hope your well, I’m getting my 22-250 rebarrled in 6 creedmoor and my 243 is getting just a new barrel but what I can’t decide is weather to go for varmint or sporter barrels, the 6 creed will be a work rifle, so for shooting deer and long range vermin and the odd gong for the crack and the 243 will be my dedicated thermal rifle, both barrels will be 24 inches long and one thing that would be handy about making one a varmint is one of the mods I already have is in m18x1 and I would then have to sell and buy a new one if I do go down to a sporter but at the same time I’m a grouse keeper so I have a lot of big hills to carry them up.
What’s your thoughts?

Don’t dictate your barrel spec around a £300 mod.
Get your barrel right for you and a mod that matchs your barrel.
If it was me. I would have the creed on a heavier barrel but short at 18 to 20 absolute max.
The 243 on a sporter but bit longer.
They will prob weigh the same.
Just me but I can’t really see any advantage in anything with a barrel over 20 nowadays.
If i can’t get the velocity I want from a 20 inch barrel I’ll change bullet or change calibre.
But thats me.

Don’t worry about £300 moderator. You can buy a Hausken adapter down to smaller thread sizes for far less.
My lad had a 223 built with a heavy profile barrel, he regretted it. It’s a lump to carry. I have gone down the road of having (eventually) everything in a Sauer 202, just adding a 223, my 20 Tac barrel will fit we think into an adapter. My 6.5x55 is lighter than my current Sako 75 short actioned 20 Tac. I know which I’d prefer to haul up into the hills.

Think about the weight. Varmint weight barrels get heavy on a long climb.
