7mm options

Having had my licence back, I have a choice of any 7mm cartridge including magnums.
I'm after a rem mag, however I thought I should ask if there is any other opinions/options that I've not thought about.
Please bare in mind i have already got a 6.5x55 which i use on just about everything, this is for big stuff, driven boar, big reds etc etc....

Many thanks

You've done well there having the calibre listed but no specific cartridge. Devon and Cornwall aren't usually keen on that due to the massive difference in energy across cartridges of the same calibre.

7x64 or 280 Remington are a nice shout without going to magnums. 7mm Rem Mag is a relatively mild magnum so can't really fault that either.
Much over that is all well and good but a 7mm RUM may be too much of a good thing for your intended purpose.

I have three 7mm rifles - a 7mm Rem Mag, a 7mm08 and a Sako in 7 x 33
I love them all and use the 7mm08 mainly for my stalking. I have to say the 7 x 33 is a MUCH underated round and deserves to be put into the T3 series of rifles.

7x33 Sako factory softpoints - 78gr Soft Point at 2450fps - not measured the barrel length but it looks to be around 22 inches.
I don't like taking it out as the rifle value is rather high!!! Look up Sako L46 if you are interested.
I thought about converting a Tikka T3 I had to the calibre but sold the rifle when I was threatened with money!
I've got the dies to reload and reckon the Nosler 90gr Soft Points in 6,8mm paper patched up to 7mm would work well.

So just scrapes in at small deer legal then. Taken it out after deer at all?
Paper patched .277" would work nicely. Might be worth trying a 100gr in .284" as well like.

Maybe get a custom mould made up? I know you're in to casting your own.

Given you have a 6.5x55 I would look at the 7x64 or 7mm rem mag. Later is a good long range rifle. Or go 7x65r in a kipplauf single shot, combination or drilling

i like the sound of 7x64, and the rem mag still fits the bill as they're far enough away from the 6.5 to justify it..

7x64 and 280 Rem are basically identical. The 7x64 edges it with slightly more case capacity. Both are pretty much perfect for what you want.
How far do you realistically shoot?

NOT a 7WSM, fantastic performance, nice to shoot, very very accurate, virtually impossible to get brass for

if you are after a long range then the 7mm rem mag delivers the velocity and flatter trajectory of the 300 win mag, but with only a bit less energy, but still more than enough, but with considerably less recoil than the 300 win mag and on a par with the 30-06 / 308.

I think your choice of a 7mm should really be more of a choice of the type of shooting you want to do and choose the rifle and scope accordingly. But you already have a 6.5x55 and that is not a lot different to the 7x57 in real terms.

I think rem mag is the way to
go for what I will use it for and what I already have. I'll still look into options in 7x64 but 90% sure I'm going for the mag.
Cheers

If you are taking it overseas to Africa etc 7mm rem mag ammo is easier to find. 7x64 is a lovely round, easy to find on the continent.

You might want to have a look at ammo pricing though:

As others have said, I'd go for either the 7x64 or 7mm Rem Mag, both will do the job perfectly. However, the 7mm Rem Mag is a more punchy round, look at the Norma Swift Scirocco 150 grain bullet, it flys at 3,166fps and has 4528 Joules of energy... that's up near 300 Win Mag territory and has almost 1000 Joules of energy more than any of the Norma 7x64 rounds!

I have a 7mm 08 and a .280ai Rem. Love the 280 but you need to reload. 7x64 probably your best choice for abroad due to ammo availability issues.

The best of the 7mm calibres is undoubtedly the .30-06 or the 8x57.

However as you specify 7mm the options are 7x57, 7x64 form the continent or 7mm-08, .280 Remington, 7mm Remington Magnum from the USA.

Of the five the last, 7mm Rem Mag has a belt and this means one less in the magazine and sometimes "issues" with feeding. In real world terms it doesn't offer much up to two or three hundred yards that the others do. Over three hundred yards it offers the advantage of a higher initial velocity.

7x57 is moribund. Nice cartridge, nothing wrong with it. Will do anything that you want but on the continent it was never in everyday use in France where the 7x64, 7mm-08, and .280 Remington (in that order) were popular. 7mm Rem Mag in both France and Germany seems "passed over" as most go dierct to the .300 Rem Mag.

My choice would, as I say, be .30-06 but if you want an all around flexible 7mm then 7x64 is the way to go. In the USA then ,280 Remington. I have a .280 Remington and a 7x64 but here in UK the .280 Remington it is a niche cartridge, a pity, but that is reality here in UK.

And as .30-06 is now legal in France I've put my 7x64 up for sale. See below. Currently at Holt's but will be collected by me in the New Year and available for offers around what I paid for it....£ 3,250.

If you've £ 3,000 to £ 4,000 to play with than look here.
