7mm rem mag bullet choice.

Trying to get hold of some 160grn sierra HPBT,i used to really rate the smaller 85grn HPBT in .243, but looks like i will have to order 500 though, got thinking about the A-Max 168grn, are these match bullets so i could get some posted is that right? and has anyone else used them to good effect?,i know some .243 users rate them or should i not even go there?.

I may be wrong (as I don't own my own rifle here  ) but I thought the good old A-max wasn't legal for deer in the UK?
Anyway - they are very popular back in NZ for hunting deer

FishnHunt - New Zealands Famous Hunting and Fishing Forum Since 1995 - Favourite 7mm rem mag loads

As I said earlier, some guys use them only for longer range shots and something else for closer up, but many use them on everything from all ranges with confidence. There were a lot of tears last year when they were hard to get hold of back in NZ.

Hayden

Thanks Southern, problem i have is the only ones in stock locally were 139grn sst which i don't want, don't think 7mm has quite made it to Cornwall yet,i suspect i will have a long journey to get any somehow but will if i have too,i would prefer a bullet without a soft nose if possible due to the nose being rounded off by repeated chambering and unchambering, although saying that the Blaser i use now seems to feed pretty straight and have never tried a soft point through it,i use 165grn .30cal nosler BTs in 30.06 and can't fault those.

Don't stress about the tips deforming. A gunsmith who reloaded for my 7mm Rem Mag (140 Sierra Game King SPBT initially) said he had conducted tests where he intentionally deformed the tips of soft nose rounds. He even went as far as bending them side ways and found that it took a huge effort to make any difference in their accuracy. I moved to 160's in the same round and didn't like the flattened tips from chambering, unchambering and recoil etc but it made no difference - they just don't look as mean as a plastic tip :D
Good luck with your search for the perfect projectile.

Thanks Hayden, yes the A-max would be illegal if it's not classed as expanding ammo,it was a pet hate of mine with my old sako and sauer the rounding off of the soft noses, some of them looked like they would shoot round corners,my mate told me that it made no odds but i just want them to be perfect, think i've got a bit of OCD when it comes to loading and ammo,:D
Cheers Neil.
